Former Pramukh Sanchalika of RSS, Pramilatai Medhe passes away at 97

Pramilatai Medhe, a prominent figure of India’s women-led nationalist movement and former Pramukh Sanchalika of the Rashtra Sevika Samiti (the women’s wing of the RSS), passed away at the age of 97 on July 31, 2025, in Nagpur. She had been residing at Devi Ahilya Mandir in Dhantoli since 1965 and had been critically ill for the past week. She breathed her last at 9:05 a.m.

As per her final wish, her body will be donated to AIIMS Nagpur on August 1. Her mortal remains were kept at Devi Ahilya Mandir for public tribute, where hundreds came to pay their respects.

Pramilatai Medhe, born on June 8, 1929, in Nandurbar, Maharashtra, was a lifelong swayamsevika deeply dedicated to the Rashtra Sevika Samiti. Holding a BA and BT degree, she was fluent in Marathi, Hindi, and English, and was known for her disciplined and purposeful life. She initially worked as a teacher and senior auditor before taking early retirement to fully commit to the Samiti.

From 1978 to 2003, she served as Akhil Bharatiya Pramukh Karyavahika, with responsibilities across Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. In 2006, she became the fourth Pramukh Sanchalika (Chief) of the Samiti, a role she held until 2012. Known for expanding the organization’s presence in North-East India, she often traveled alone under difficult conditions. At age 75, she undertook a remarkable 266-day Bharat Parikrama, exemplifying her unwavering spirit and commitment to the nationalist cause.

Leaders and dignitaries mourned the loss, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi posting on his X, "Deeply saddened by the demise of Pramilatai Medhe, former Pramukh of Rashtra Sevika Samiti. Her entire life was devoted to society and national service. Her invaluable contribution to women's empowerment and social work will always be remembered."
