  • Women reach 25% of investors; growth expands beyond metros
  • 19 states exceed average; participation spread across various regions
  • Tier 2,3 cities rise in their participation share owing to rising digital access

India’s stock markets are witnessing a steady structural evolution, with women now comprising close to one in four investors. The gradual shift has been shaping up progressively over five to six years and is on a rise. From being well below 20% before Covid-19, women’s participation has grown to 24.9% in FY26. This clearly indicates that one in every four investors in the market is a woman.

Sanaa Zia Khan, Director at Centricity Overseas Financial Distribution says that, “Women’s participation has grown through a sustained structural trend, not a one-time spike,” "The most encouraging part is that women's participation is no longer confined to large urban centres," added Sanaa. "The next phase of growth could increasingly come from smaller cities rather than traditional financial hubs."

According to industry participants, this remains one of the least highlighted developments in India’s retail investment story. It was worth noticing that earlier women investors were primarily concentrated in metropolitan cities but the growth trajectory has diversified geographically.

With Maharashtra maintaining a high participation rate of around 29%, there is an increased momentum in increasingly emerging from beyond tier-one cities. The investor base is clearly widening across regions with 19 states now surpassing the national average up from 16 in FY23.

Gains in smaller cities and the Northeast are fuelled by smartphones and trading apps. "The real momentum is coming from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities," says Adrija Agarwal, President, Sattva Group and Founder, Sattva Ventures. "This reflects the emergence of a new, aspirational investor class across non-metro India."
