Delhi's First Women-Run Police Station Opens in Subzi Mandi

Delhi has achieved a major breakthrough in enhancing women's safety, and gender responsive policing with the launch of the first ever fully fledged women police station in the Subzi Mandi area of North Delhi. Fully-fledged by female police officers, the newly-established facility has been designed to further enhance the capacity of the police in the prevention, investigation and resolution of offences committed against women as well as to provide a more supportive setting for women victims of offences to seek justice.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu inaugurated the police women station at Subzi Mandi police station in the presence of Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golchha. The move is seen as a significant step towards enhancing law enforcement's accessibility, responsiveness and sensitivity to women issues in the national capital area.
The new police station is the first of its kind in Delhi, where all of the staff, including the investigators, administrative officers, and support staff, are women. This specially designed area will help more women to report crime without fear, hesitation or social stigma.
Police sources said the station has been created to have a special wing for serious crimes against women such as domestic violence, sexual harassment, stalking, assault and other gender cases. The initiative will offer a specific space and staff to enable timely response, victim support and effective investigations.

During the inauguration, officials highlighted the role of the women police station as a significant step towards a more gender-responsive policing system, highlighting its importance. It has been created not just as a law enforcement centre, but as a women's support centre for women who suffer violence, harassment and discrimination.
The police station will also be responsible for community outreach and awareness-building, in addition to criminal cases. Awareness programmes will be held routinely to inform women of their legal rights, the protection they can avail of and how they can seek help, authorities said. The station will also offer counselling services to assist victims and their legal and emotional issues.
Police officials further highlighted that community participation will play a crucial role in the station’s functioning. The department seeks to foster increased trust and understanding between law enforcement agencies and local communities through outreach programs and engagement initiatives, as well as increased awareness and discussion of women's rights and safety measures.
