Chief Minister Rekha Gupta declared on Monday that the Delhi Commission for Women, which had been dormant for some time, will be reactivated soon to deal with the increasing number of pending cases related to women in distress.
Addressing the ‘Rashtriya Mahila Aapke Ghar Jan Sunwai’ event, organised by the National Women Commission, CM Gupta underscored the pressing need for a working women's commission, citing that there are almost 1,500 cases pending action.
Referring to a recent case heard at a public hearing in her house—where parents accused boys of harassing their daughters after an earlier complaint—Rekha emphasized the need for speedy and firm action. "These people might go on making mistakes, but it is our responsibility to act against them," she said.
To enhance women's security in the capital, the Chief Minister said that 50,000 CCTV cameras would be installed at spots identified as dark areas. She explained that such places are not only dimly lit but also have weak network connectivity, increasing their vulnerability.
Gupta also reiterated the government's promise to assist working women, citing plans to set up 500 crèche centers and to give financial aid of ₹2,500 to deserving women. She assured that efforts are currently in progress to initiate these schemes.
