Cholan Tours Launches Women's E-Auto Program in Madurai

Cholan Tours, one of the foremost Destination Management Companies in India, has launched the Women E-Auto Programme in Madurai, Tamil Nadu to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for local women and promote the use of clean, eco-friendly transportation modes in urban areas.

Cholan Tours has been operating as a small travel agency in southern India for over 20 years. The company is now being recognised at the national level as one of India's leading tourism companies'.

Every year, Cholan Tours serves thousands of travellers from domestic and international markets that are looking for customized travel experiences, logistical support, ground-handling services and niche tours of India.

Cholan Tours was born of its extensive service network, professional expertise, and a deeply ingrained commitment to responsible tourism. Its concentration on quality and welfare has gained it five National Tourism Awards and four Tamil Nadu State Tourism Awards.

Similarly committed to the cause of inclusive responsible tourism, it helped 20 women of Madurai start their career as trained E-Auto drivers.

The selection and training of the participants were done in collaboration with MOWO, an NGO that focuses on enabling safe mobility for women.

The training covered operation of the vehicles, soft skills, and customer service, added to basic knowledge about tourism, so that they could provide safe, reliable transportation to both residents and visitors alike.

During the launch of Cholan Tours, the Managing Director and Founder made the statement that he envisions this initiative as a way to give people an opportunity to establish their own businesses, as well as to help create new industries for other women-owned and operated businesses, and would like to see more focus placed on creating this type of opportunity in Madurai and Tamil Nadu. The Managing Director stated that this project would be a social project and would be a non-profit initiative.

Attending the launch on Nov 22, 2025, were several prominent people including Jai Bharati, who founded MOWO, and also present were Pandian Kumaravel, Mythily Pandian and members of the Cholan Tours team.

Cholan Tours has shown its commitment to supporting women and the development of communities and has additionally assisted in promoting the sustainable tourism industry to support the emergence of women's green mobility sectors in India.
