- Programs for free skill development training have been announced for qualified individuals
- Tailoring, embroidery, Aari work, and beautician training are among the courses offered
In a major step toward empowering women through self-employment, the Greater Chennai Corporation has announced the launch of free skill development training programs to boost women's employability and entrepreneurial potential across the city.
Mayor R. Priya launched the project during the 2025–2026 budget sessions. It will provide training in computer-based accounting software (Tally), tailoring, embroidery, Aari work, and beautician services. The goal of these in-demand skills is to assist women in launching their own companies or finding profitable jobs.
A senior Greater Chennai Corporation official stated that one training center will be built in each of the city's 15 zones, with a budget of ₹50 lakh per zone, for a total project investment of ₹7.5 crore. With an emphasis on empowering women from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, the program will be provided completely free of charge.
The 880 hours of training will be split between 270 hours of tailoring and Aari work, 240 hours of beautician courses, and 370 hours of Tally (accounting software). By giving thousands of women marketable skills, the program hopes to increase their financial independence by empowering them to launch their own companies or land good jobs. It is anticipated that the Corporation will shortly make available the comprehensive training schedule and enrollment procedures.
