  • The Union Cabinet under Narendra Modi will pass changes that will allow the process of implementing 33 percent women's reservation
  • This is to ensure that it happens before the upcoming general elections of 2029

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet is preparing for legislation amendments related to 33 percent reservation for women in anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections (2029). The Union Cabinet will review two types of bills connected to this process.

The first bill will amend the 2023 Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. That law’s reservation of one-third of the Lok Sabha and state assembly seats to women is based on the completion of the delimitation process, which is supposed to be determined after the 2026 census.

The second bill will amend the 84th Amendment of the Constitution, which freezes any delimitation processes until after the 2026 census. To perform the delimitation work quicker and allow for the reservation of one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, this amendment must be approved by The Union Cabinet.

The overall goal of these amendments is to increase the number of Lok Sabha and state assembly members by 50 percent and to apply the women’s reservation to the newly added assemblies.

The proposal to reserve one-third of seats for women has been reviewed since the early 1990s, however, the unanimous vote by the Members of Parliament to approve the bill was the first bill to be executed under the new Parliament House in 2023.
