  • The Ministry of Textiles has appointed Arti Kanwar as its Additional Secretary
  • Arti is a Gujarat cadre officer in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) of the year 2001 batch
  • She takes over from Rohit Kansal, who is the Secretary in the Department of Rural Development

Recently, the Indian Government has appointed Arti Kanwar to serve as an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Textiles. She is a member of the IAS from Gujarat (Batch of 2001).

Rohit Kansal previously occupied this position until he left to become Secretary in the Department of Rural Development (under the Ministry of Rural Development).

With a government's focus on modernization, sustainability, and exportation of the textile industry, Arti's appointment in that respect comes just as there is great need for someone to implement policies designed to enhance value chain development, competitiveness and generation of job opportunities in the textile sector.

Arti has been working for more than 20 years as a civil servant and has been employed by different levels of the Government of Gujarat and India.

Currently, she serves as both Chief Commissioner of State Tax for the State of Gujarat since January 2026 and Secretary, Economic Affairs, in Gujarat since June 2023.

She had been assigned the positions of Special Commissioner of Commercial Tax in Gujarat, Deputy Jute Commissioner in the Ministry of Textiles, and State Project Director for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in Gujarat, and District Collector of Bharuch. These positions have carried duties ranging from fiscal management to policy implementation in a particular sector.

As another piece of news, the Ministry of Textiles has recently moved into its new premises at the GPO ‘A’ building in Netaji Nagar. This move is a step towards the modernisation and better administration within the government.

The Textile Minister Giriraj Singh mentioned that this modern building would help provide better services to the citizens and thus result in effective governance. He also said that modern infrastructure coupled with the right work culture would be helpful for better policy making in the Ministry.
