  • The government may introduce women-specific budgetary policies in the Union Budget 2026
  • Remedies could include efforts to improve access to credit and insurance services through Jan Dhan accounts

For Union Budget 2026, women-centric financial policies are being drafted by the government for women in terms of access to credit and insurance facilities through Jan Dhan Accounts.

The other proposals that are being considered include extending the ambit of Jan Suraksha Schemes and allowing policyholders more flexibility to improve their insurance covers.

According to sources who are aware of the discussions, the proposed moves that can be considered may include the following: Credit cards tailored to women.

Loans designed to cater to women. Insurance schemes designed to target women. These will be added to the Grameen Credit Score launched during the FY26 Budget and the credit facilities that target start-up entrepreneurs.

It was revealed that schemes related to cooperation with the credit requirements of rural enterprises and self-help groups are also being considered. Such proposals are a measure to ensure the efficiency of social security-linked financial products.

The NITI Aayog is currently analyzing the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), with a focus on revitalizing the number of inoperative accounts.

This analysis also has the objective of ensuring that the account holders keep their accounts operational by making credit and insurance services more accessible to them.

As stated, “The Aayog focuses on increased credit penetration as well as increased awareness levels among Jan Dhan account holders as vital to a robust Digital Economy for India.”

The current review of the PMJDY aims to ensure the financial inclusion scheme meets the overall development agenda of the government as set forth by the Viksit Bharat vision for 2047.

It was also added that customer-centric initiatives like continued work to repatriate unclaimed funds and enhance the process of handling insurance claims grievances through enhanced regulatory supervision might also feature in the budget announcements.
