By: WE Staff
In a recent parliamentary update on March 23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha and underscored the strategic risk posed by West Asia’s situation to its impact on India’s economic and security framework. In a speech that lasted around 20 minutes, he assured the safety of Indian nationals of prime importance, with the government being proactive in supporting citizens, securing supply chains, stabilizing energy access, and protecting the academic interest of students abroad.
Ensuring Safety to One Crore Indians in West Asia
“The government is alert, empathetic and eager to extend all help,” PM Modi stated. He urged the Parliament to align as a single unified voice on the management of this crisis situation prioritizing safety of one crore Indians residing and professionally working in West Asia.
In his first address in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing Budget Session, PM Modi outlined India’s strategic stance on the evolving situation, focusing on critical diplomatic initiatives, touching base on regional stability concerns, and potential disruptions to global energy and trade routes. He highlighted disruptions to key maritime corridors and the risk corridor to Indian Nationals in the Gulf. India has and will continue to maintain a vigilant watch over Gulf shipping lanes and trade flows.
Government’s Review of Impact on Economy
The address came as a review of the crisis’ impact on India’s economic activity, hampering supply chains and essential goods. In it, the government shared proposed measures and strategies to safeguard citizens and business continuity, limiting the disruption caused.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the cabinet secretary had recently presented a comprehensive review of the evolving tense global situation. Implemented mitigation measures and those planned by various ministries and departments were outlined at large. Indian officials reviewed potential impact on multiple industries such as agriculture, energy, MSMEs, exporters, trade, shipping, finance, and supply chains, and also evaluated the economic outlook and strategies to protect India’s economic stability.
"India has always advocated for the welfare of humanity and peace. I reiterate that dialogue and diplomacy are the only solutions to this problem. Our efforts are directed toward de-escalating tensions and ending this conflict. Endangering the lives of anyone in this war is not in the best interests of humanity, so India's efforts are to encourage all parties to seek a peaceful resolution as soon as possible,”PM Modi added. He also argued that the nation has managed well with the heightened West Asia war situation as “the fundamentals of India's economy are strong”.
Dialogue-Driven Resolution for Trade Route Protection
The Indian Prime Minster reaffirmed nation’s commitment to dialogue-driven resolution; while he also described threats to commercial vessels and blockages of vital trade routes like the Strait of Hormuz, key global oil transit corridor, being unacceptable. He emphasized that India will continue to undertake proactive and sustained diplomatic initiatives to safeguard movement of its ships in a volatile environment.
The Indian government has assessed that the disrupted West Asia’s situation could have long-term effects on the economy, stressing the need for preparedness and counter-measures being discussed proactively, displaying India’s economic resilience.
Escalation Following February 28 Strikes
With the conflict beginning on February 28, the crisis intensified after US-Israel launched surprise airstrikes on multiple sites and cities across Iran, focusing its military infrastructure and Islamic Republic’s top leadership. One of the initial strikes led to the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader and former President of Iran, which soon resulted in regional retaliation and heightened geopolitical unrest and risk.
Iran saw a rapid shift in leadership, with Mojtaba Khamenei appointed by the Assembly of Experts. The strikes escalated in further disruption of vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz, affecting global oil supply chains and causing a global energy shock. The conflict has created widespread fear of regional escalation, threatening oil infrastructure in the region. The situation has continued to be under world-wide scrutiny and tensions have escalated with thousands of casualties.
Call for National Solidarity amid Strategic Preparedness
Prime Minister Modi has held multiple high-level meetings and engagements with national and regional leaders to navigate the evolving situation in favour of India. Offering help to the one’s in adversity, the Indian government has ensured 24/7 assistance through Indian missions, help lines, evacuations and on-ground support. PM Modi called for national solidarity to become the foundational strengths to navigate the situation with effective diplomacy and robust energy security strategies coming into play.
