  • The Bihar government will provide a maximum of ₹200,000 to approximately 4 million women
  • The amount will be given from April as part of the second installment of the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana
  • The program is administered by the rural development department

The Bihar government will soon begin distributing funds as part of the second phase of the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana Programme.

Approximately four million women will receive up to ₹200,000 each. This financial support aims to encourage women to develop small businesses, all of which need to be assessed in order to qualify for the funds distributed through the MMRY.

Beneficiaries of the second phase of funding will be selected from a pool of approximately 15.6 million women who have previously received ₹10,000 each as initial capital to begin developing their enterprises.

Women who have established viable businesses will be assessed by an RDD staff member and provided with up to ₹200,000 additional funding.

The goal of the MMRY is to provide support for women establishing self-employment and increasing their family income. Urban women who fall under specific eligibility criteria constitute a portion of the overall eligible female population targeted by this Programme.

In addition to providing second phase funding to approximately four million women, the Bihar government also plans to disburse another 2.5 million additional initial capital funds, thereby raising the total number of women eligible for the MMRY to 18.1 million.

Currently, there are approximately 19.9 million women who have applied for financial assistance to start a new enterprise.

Himanshu Sharma, chief executive officer of the Jeevika Programme, which is the implementing agency for MMRY, said that the second installment of funds will be released in phases to eligible individuals and small groups who have shown effective use of the first installment of funds.

This is expected to begin in April, with 4-5 million women being the first to receive the funds, especially those in the agriculture and dairy sectors.

More beneficiaries may also be eligible for additional funds, officials said, as the process of evaluation of the use of the first installment of funds is still ongoing.

Opposition parties, such as the Rashtriya Janata Dal, and Left parties have called on the government to expedite the release of the second installment.

The Leader of the Opposition, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, stated that his party is monitoring how the scheme is being implemented, claiming that launching it prior to the elections is a tactic for political gain.

Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and other NDA leaders have expressed their commitment to disbursing the second installment to those who qualify to encourage women’s economic contributions and independence.
