India won the first Women’s T20I against Australia by 21 runs in DLS due to rain interruptions in Australia’s 2022 tour.

India’s Arundhati Reddy took 4 wickets for 22 runs in four overs which restricted Australia to 133 runs and dismissed their final two batters with 2 overs left in the match.

Before the rain hit, India had already scored 50 runs at 1 out after 5.1 overs. At that time, India had reached their DLS target with 29 runs scored, Smriti Mandhana (16 runs from 17 balls), and Jemimah Rodrigues facing the Australian bowlers at that time.

Shafali Verma gave India a good start, scoring 21 runs off 11 balls before being bowled by Sophie Molineux.

Australia appeared to be doing great before the rain delay, as they had as many as 22 runs after 2.2 overs, due to hits from above, but lost their first two wickets at quick consecutive rates with continued pressure on the bowling team; Beth Mooney (5 runs) was caught out by Smriti from Renuka Singh and the second wicket of Georgia Voll (18 runs off 10 balls) was caught out by Kranti Gaud from the bouncer.

The Australian innings were rebuilt by Ellyse Perry (20 runs from 11 balls) and Phoebe Litchfield (26 runs from 19 balls) as they partnered for a total of 41 runs, however, following Ellyse’s dismissal from a fantastic catch by Harmanpreet Kaur and with Arundhati’s contribution, India gained some momentum.

After her wicket, India was able to dismiss two more Australian batters and had reduced Australia to just 80 runs for 5 wickets in just 10 overs.

Georgia Wareham (30 runs from 19 balls) partnered with Nicola Carey (12 runs) in adding a total of 41 runs for the sixth wicket and halted India’s run from earlier.

However, both Georgia and Nicola were dismissed shortly thereafter and left Australia at just 121 runs for 7 wickets.

With all of the earlier achievements of the Australian team behind it, new T20I captain Sophie begins the next chapter in Australian Women’s cricket history in this series.
