On September 13, Bengaluru will see the fourth iteration of Chhalaang: The Leap Forward, one of India's biggest platforms to raise the profile of women in tech.
It is being organized by HR advisory company MetaMorph and will be held at BHIVE, convening more than 350 women engineers in person while over 9,800 registrations have been received so far.
Chhalaang began in 2022 as an initiative of the organization in-house, and has travelled into a movement across the country. It came about through structural barriers many women face within the tech industry specifically, career interruptions, maternity leave, and systematic discrimination.
The event was designed not only as a coding hackathon but as an opportunity women were able to think out of the box, network, and step into their leadership role.
The last edition, Chhalaang 2.0, organized in April 2024 at Microsoft for Startups, cemented its title of India's biggest women-in-tech hackathon.
The event saw more than 2,800 registrations, where users came up with solutions for real-life challenges pitched by companies like Gameskraft, Groww, Bureau, Veera, and DMI Finance. The winners were awarded prizes of Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2 lakh, and Rs 1 lakh, along with special awards and in-kind sponsorships.
Swati Gupta, Associate Partner, and Sanam Rawal, Co-Founder of MetaMorph, said, "Right from the start, our intention with Chhalaang has been modest yet audacious — to make a platform where women in tech can be intelligent, ambitious, and unapologetically themselves what originated as a space celebrating talent is now a movement to define the leaders of the future". The next Chhalaang 4.0 will feature:
Hackathons centered on real-time problem statements, with a presentation of prototypes to industry leaders, leadership conversations with senior technologists and founders, networking events designed to bring together women in roles, experience areas, and industries.
The event has seen strong backing from the ecosystem. Sprinto is the brand partner, Acko is the co-partner, and Base is the special prize partner.
Other supporting brands are Tricog and Porter. Brand sponsors are BHIVE, Logitech, Intrcity, Wendy's, and Pressman.
Lifestyle and wellness brands Purplle, Plush, Sirona, Bliss Club, Ultra Human, Plix, and Soch Foods are also sponsoring the experience.
"Real progress in technology takes place when different ideas come together. Chhalaang is a platform that appreciates those who think differently, build confidently, and contribute to creating the future," added Girish, Co-founder of Sprinto.
Gaurav Gupta, Acko's VP of Engineering, further said that the event embodies the ethos of innovation: "Some of the largest innovations this is when teams are provided with the freedom to experiment, hack, and challenge traditional boundaries. Chhalaang gives that room to women technologists."
