India is set to script history as it hosts the Billie Jean King Cup Play-Offs for the first time from November 14-16 at the S.M. Krishna Tennis Stadium in Bengaluru. The prestigious event, considered the pinnacle of international women’s team tennis, brings global competition to Indian soil and marks a transformative moment for the nation’s presence in world tennis.
India will compete in Group G against Slovenia and the Netherlands, with home advantage offering Indian players a rare opportunity to challenge elite opponents under familiar conditions. Captain Vishal Uppal has emphasized a process-driven approach, stating that the team will focus on “attitude and effort, not the result.” Leading India’s singles challenge are Sahaja Yamalapalli (World No. 309) and Shrivalli Bhamidipaty (World No. 381), both preparing to take on higher-ranked rivals.
The Play-Offs carry significant global stakes, as two wins could propel India into the World Group, an achievement the nation has long pursued. The event also reflects India’s growing stature as a host of major international women’s sporting tournaments, following recent showpiece events like the World Para Athletics Championships and the Women’s Cricket World Cup.
To ensure seamless preparation and organization, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has sanctioned Rs 80 lakh to the All India Tennis Association under the ANSF scheme, alongside funding a national coaching camp for the squad. The seven group winners in Bengaluru will advance to the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers, keeping their hopes alive for a place in the elite Finals.
