The Assam Government has introduced the Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina (MMNM) scheme to empower girls and prevent child marriages. The scheme provides monthly stipends to approximately 10 lakh female students in government institutions, excluding married students, private school, college, and university students along with excluding children of ministers, legislators, meritorious students, and recipients of other state benefits. The scheme aims to increase girls' enrollment in educational institutions by around 200,000 this year.
Assam government offers a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000 to 10 lakh female students on the 11th day of the month who are in government institutions, including Rs 1,250 for Class 12 students who enrolled in degree courses for the next three to four years until they complete their graduation. Additionally, the post-graduation and bachelor of education students will receive Rs 2,500 per month until their course completion. This significant step reflects the state's commitment to girls' education and empowerment.
The MMNM scheme aims to prevent child marriage but is not available to married girls up to degree level. Post-graduate female students can still get the benefit. The scheme sets behavioral and academic standards, disqualifies irregular students, and requires parental signature. Financial support is distributed annually for five years. Assam government allocates Rs 300 crores for this respective scheme.
