  • First woman Army canoeist wins India’s maiden international gold
  • Megha Pradeep secures two gold and one silver medal
  • Strong performance at Asian Games test event boosts India

Havildar Megha Pradeep has made history in women in sports as she became the first Indian woman to win an international gold medal in canoeing. She is also the first female canoeist to join the Indian Army, and this has been a great move towards women involvement in water sports.

Megha delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Canoe Sprint Asian Games Test Event held in Miyoshi City, Japan. She won two gold medals for the C1 200-meter and C1 500-meter events and a silver medal for the C2 500-meter category. This will act as a major qualifier to the 2026 Asian Games in which 45 countries are set to participate.

Her achievement shows how women athletes now compete in various sports throughout India Previously, Oinam Binita Chanu of Odisha won gold in kayaking at the Canoe Sprint International President Cup in Uttarakhand in 2025 and para-athlete Prachi Yadav won gold in 2023 at the Asian Para Games.

Canoeing is different to kayaking in style and technique. Canoes are open-hulled boats that have athletes seated on their knees and have a single-bladed paddle, whereas kayaks are closed and have double-bladed paddles. These differences impact speed, balance, and control.

Megha’s journey has been remarkable. She has won a bronze medal at Asian Canoe Sprint Championships, Tokyo, 2024, and previously, she won silver at the 2023 Junior Asian Championships. She was the first Indian female to participate in C1 500 finals at the 2025 U23 World Championships in Portugal.

Trained at Army Kayaking and Canoeing Node in Roorkee, Megha is the example of the success of the initiatives which promote the inclusion of women in the Agnipath scheme. Her success not only makes the nation proud but also motivates more young women to get into the sports career.
