- Amazon India launched partnerships with several institutions under the Government of India.
- These collaborations are meant for encouraging traditional artisans, women-founded businesses, as well as start-ups
Amazon India has recently formed several new partnerships with different organizations of the Indian Government in order to support traditional artisans, women entrepreneurs, new businesses, and innovative research in the logistics market.
Amongst those new partnerships are those with MoMSME (Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade), and Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (a university established under the Ministry of Railways).
According to Samir Kumar, Country Manager for Amazon India, the company is dedicated to continuing to work alongside these government organizations to support artisans, entrepreneurs, and the logistics industry.
In addition, he states, "We believe that through these partnerships we can assist the Government of India and the communities and businesses we serve with their overall growth objectives as well as provide greater access to new opportunities."
In this regard, Amazon would support research and capability-building at Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya, India's first university dedicated to transportation and logistics.
This also creates a report on warehousing challenges and opportunities in India and establishes a research chair at GSV for long-term work in relevant fields.
GSV Vice Chancellor Manoj Choudhary added that it will enable research plans and innovations with an understanding from the industry perspective.
The collaboration of Amazon with Mo MSME aims at promoting the PM Vishwakarma Scheme, and it will be very helpful for traditional artisans like blacksmiths, potters, carpenters, goldsmiths, and sculptors, and artisans who have been passing down their skills from generation to generation. Artisans will be brought on board on the ‘Karigar’ programme on Amazon.in.
Additionally, MoMSME’s Development Commissioner and Additional Secretary, Dr. Rajneesh, added that “the partnership with Amazon India will enable artisans to engage with the digital economy more effectively. By extension, it will also enable artisans to upgrade and develop in a better manner.”
Amazon also extends its partnership with DPIIT to support women entrepreneurs and early-stage startups.
As a result of the extension, the Saheli Accelerate program aims to increase from 18 women-led businesses to 50. Additionally, there will be an emphasis on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Moreover, there will be special onboarding and launch services offered for direct-to-consumer startups.
Sanjiv, Joint Secretary at DPIIT, said, “This partnership with Amazon India will enable us to better impact innovation support efforts with regard to access to mentors, market, and early-stage support for women-owned businesses and start-ups.”
