- The women’s captain of the Australian team, Alyssa Healy, has announced her retirement from international cricket
- The final series would be a multi-format series against India, to be held in February/March 2026
Alyssa Healy, the captain of the Australian women’s team, has revealed that she is set to retire from the international format.
The retired player’s last matches would be in the upcoming multi-format series against India that would take place in February-March 2026. Alyssa would lead the Australian team in the ODI series and an only test in Perth but would not be taking part in the T20Is.
“Although she is very passionate about representing Australia, she has felt that she has lost some competitive edge, and looking at the overall plans that the team has been making for the World Cup, she thinks this might be the right time for the next generation to take over, especially when it comes to the T20 format,” said Alyssa.
The series in India assumes added importance, as she will lead the Australian team in the ODIs as well as the pink-ball Test, thereby finishing her international career in a major international series on home soil.
According to Alyssa, “It's with mixed emotions that the upcoming India series will be my last for Australia. I still enjoy playing for my country, but I feel the fire in the belly, the drive and passion that has pushed me for so long, isn't quite the same anymore, which makes this the right time.”
Alyssa Healy, niece of former Australia Men’s wicket-keeper Ian Healy, made her international debut in 2010, aged 19, vs. New Zealand.
With her 15-year cricketing tenure drawing to a close, she is going to wear her retirement over games played – 162 T20s, 126 ODIs, & 11 Tests – and records – a record-breaking 126 top-class catches in women’s T20s.
Alyssa also owns a variety of personal records, such as the individual's highest score in the Women’s T20 World Cup Final, as well as the most Wtkt’s taken as Wk in women’s T20I's.
Healy was appointed the permanent Captain of the Australia side in 2023 after former Captain, Meg Lanning, announced her retirement. While leading the team, she has guided them to a 16-0 clean sweep in the Ashes series against England and has reached the finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2024.
As a player, she has won both the 2019 Belinda Clark Award and the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year award in 2018 and 2019.
At a domestic level, she has played a pivotal role for the Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League, where she has accumulated over 3000 runs in 11 seasons and has won two titles. She has played a key role in the Women’s Premier League, during which she led the UP Warriorz and has contributed to the development of women’s cricket.
