  • A female crew from Larsen & Toubro (L&T) came together and commissioned a 100-tonne dump truck at the Noamundi iron ore mine of Tata Steel in Jharkhand
  • It is the first time in India that such a heavy machine was dealt with entirely by women technicians
  • This success complements L&T's effort in bringing more women into mining and construction lines of work

A women-only crew of Larsen & Toubro's Construction & Mining Machinery business (L&T CMB) recently assembled, tested, and commissioned a 100-tonne Komatsu HD785-7 dump truck for Tata Steel's Noamundi iron ore mine in Jharkhand.

This is the first time in India, such a complex and large machine has been assembled, tested, and commissioned by women technicians.

The Komatsu HD785-7, with sophisticated systems including variable horsepower control, automatic retard speed control, and KOMTRAX Plus telematics, was commissioned within more than six days between July 28 and August 2, 2025, despite operational issues caused by severe monsoon rains.

The commissioning involved activities such as axle mounting, hydraulic integration, and complete system installation. The machine was formally transferred on August 18 to Tata Steel, where it will operate by exclusively female crew.

The efforts of the team showcase L&T's commitment to tackle gender inclusivity by leveraging systematic technical training, mentorship, and practical experience on site.

The achievement has been conferred as a crucial milestone towards supporting the involvement of women in the mining and construction equipment industry.

The Komatsu HD785-7 will henceforth serve to transport iron ore at the Noamundi mine as a testament to the increasing number of women taking on roles in traditionally patriarchal industries.
