Women in architecture and interior design in the Philippines are steadily reshaping the creative and built landscape with a distinct blend of innovation, cultural sensitivity, and human-centric thinking. Their work goes beyond aesthetics, focusing on how spaces influence lifestyles, nurture communities, and preserve identity.

By integrating functionality with storytelling, they continue to redefine modern design while remaining deeply rooted in context and culture. Within this evolving narrative, Ar. Jenny Mae Casilang-Briones, Principal Architect at CMJ Design and Build, exemplifies a purpose-driven approach to architecture.

She views architecture not merely as the creation of structures or visually appealing spaces, but as a powerful medium that shapes human existence and experiences. For her, architecture is where life unfolds and, over time, transforms into memory, giving her work a deeper sense of meaning and intent.

Early in her journey, she was inspired by the idea that design has the power to elevate how people live, move, and connect with each other and with nature. Her education provided her with strong technical foundations while sharpening her ability to think critically and solve problems creatively.

Influenced by her mentor’s belief that architecture is the mother of all arts, she embraces its connection to interiors, furniture, fine arts, and fashion, further strengthening her passion and multidisciplinary design perspective.

Take us through your extensive expertise as an architect. Having worked across several firms, what specialization have you gathered over the years?

My expertise has been shaped by hands-on experience in both design studios and live construction environments, giving me a clear understanding of the gap between concept and execution. Early on, I positioned myself as someone who bridges this divide, bringing design visions to life with precision.

Today, my approach focuses on aligning creativity with technical accuracy, constructability, and efficiency. I specialize in design-and-build, particularly in high-end residential homes, land development and subdivision planning, and commercial buildings.

What sets me apart is a philosophy rooted in performance and longevity. I go beyond aesthetics to ensure financial discipline, lifecycle value, and practicality, delivering projects that are visually refined, strategically sound, and built to endure while serving people effectively.

My design language balances nature, space, and human interaction, using earthy tones, natural materials, and rich textures

Could you introduce CMJ Design and Build and outline your key responsibilities as the Principal Architect?

At CMJ Design and Build, the philosophy “Your vision is our mission” defines every project we undertake. Each engagement begins with a deep effort to understand the client’s aspirations, intentions, and the legacy they wish to create.

These ideas are carefully translated into a clear architectural direction that is thoughtful, practical, and enduring. The firm focuses on delivering premium, well curated spaces where design quality and execution come together seamlessly, ensuring outcomes that truly elevate the original vision.

As Founder and Principal Architect, I shape the creative direction and overall narrative of the firm. I lead the complete design journey, from concept development to final execution, while refining spatial experience, material selection, and design language.

Alongside this, I guide the brand identity and build strong relationships with clients and collaborators, while fostering a culture rooted in collaboration, precision, and timeless design excellence.

As someone in a creative profession, where do you draw your inspiration from, and what defines the uniqueness of your design approach?

My creative perspective blends travel, luxury design, and authentic human experiences, drawing inspiration from how leading fashion houses craft identity and emotion with precision. This approach informs my architectural philosophy, where every detail contributes to a refined and meaningful spatial experience.

Influenced by history and cultural narratives, I believe spaces should embody memory and purpose rather than exist as mere structures. My design language balances nature, space, and human interaction, using earthy tones, natural materials, and rich textures.

Clean contemporary forms are softened with organic elements, creating environments that reflect quiet luxury, timeless elegance, and a deep, experiential connection between people and their surroundings.

Looking back at your journey, what milestones define your path, and what is your guiding success mantra?

A defining milestone has been establishing CMJ Design and Build as a brand known for both design excellence and construction reliability, a rare balance in the industry. Another significant shift was moving from pursuing projects to attracting the right high value clients through clear positioning.

My guiding mantra is “Positioned by purpose. Moved with a vision. Built for legacy.” I see success as a continuous discipline shaped by intentional decisions and aligned actions. For me, true success lies in creating work that goes beyond personal achievement and contributes to shaping communities, environments, and lasting impact for future generations.

Going forward, how do you foresee the Philippines’ architectural landscape evolving, and what trends will shape its future?

The architectural landscape in the Philippines is steadily moving toward more intentional and lifestyle-driven design, where spaces are created with deeper purpose and user experience in mind.

There is a growing preference for modern tropical luxury homes that respond to climate and context, along with an increasing demand for sustainable and energy-efficient solutions. The rise of subdivision and land development projects is also shaping the industry, while clients are becoming more aware of design quality and brand value.

At the same time, the role of architects is evolving beyond traditional service providers into that of personal brands and thought leaders who influence design direction and industry standards.
