Architecture is the perfect combination of imagination and regulation where ideas are not only judged by their visual appeal but also by their functionality, execution and durability. Charina Amanda Buscaino-Javier, Founder and Principal Architect of Skala Architects is a strong proponent of this concept.

She strongly believes in crafting great designs and is led by a clear purpose that stems from focused thinking and disciplined execution. For her, architecture is about ideas, as well as translating them into spaces that genuinely serve the people who inhabit them.

Armed with over two decades of industry experience, Charina specializes in comprehensive planning, urban design, project management and more.

Through the years, her expertise developed as she gained practical experience in architecture and interior design, thus realizing the indispensable importance of execution.

A monumental shift came when she moved into leadership and took charge of projects, teams and clients. She then moved past being just a designer and took on the role of a business leader and mentor as she founded Skala Architects.

Skala focuses on deliberate and well-reasoned designs that arise from understanding the context, prioritizing function, the human experience and durability rather than short-lived trends.

Leading with clarity and focus, Charina today continues to build a business that people can rely on while also powering the future of architecture, especially the influence of AI-driven, adaptive and performance-based design in the Philippines.

How has your journey in architecture developed over the years?

My two-decade-long career has been a journey of learning, unlearning, and refinement. Early exposure to architecture and interior design gave me a holistic view of project conception and execution.

Transitioning into leadership roles and founding Skala were key milestones, teaching me that strong design leadership thrives on clarity, consistency, and accountability, shaping the professional I am today.

Architecture is not just about ideas, but about carrying them through to create spaces that truly work

Introduce us to Skala Architects. Share your core philosophy and role as principal architect?

Skala Architects was built on a clear belief that good design should be intentional, coherent, and lasting. We focus on architecture and interior design that is guided by clarity of purpose, quality of experience, and long-term value, not just visual impact.

As principal architect, I lead the overall design direction of the firm and set the standard for how we think, design, and deliver our work.

I am deeply involved from the early conceptual stages all the way to the key decision points during execution. I also mentor the team, work closely with clients, and ensure that every project reflects both our clients’ goals and our own values as a practice.

For me, designing with intent translates to designing with purpose, being grounded in a deep understanding of the client’s requirements and of architecture’s impact on its users and its context. Designing with focus means preserving the true essence of a project: its defining concept, its shared vision, and the values that give it clarity.

How do you balance design vision with real-world constraints?

Every project comes with its own constraints, including budget, timelines, technical limitations, and differing stakeholder expectations. One of the biggest challenges is aligning vision with reality without losing the essence of design, and I’ve learned that clarity at the very beginning is crucial.

We spend significant time defining the project, understanding what truly matters, what can remain flexible, and where compromise is not an option.

The process begins by establishing the design intent and purpose, ensuring each project has a strong reason for being what it is. Experience and function are prioritized before form, so spaces work effectively before they aim to impress. I strongly believe in context, coherence, and longevity, designing not for trends but for projects that age well.

Which key milestones have defined your journey? What philosophy guides your approach to architecture and design?

The true achievement through my journey has been building a practice clients trust, one that delivers consistency and continues to grow in both capability and responsibility. Watching Skala take on increasingly complex and meaningful projects, and delivering them well, has been the most fulfilling part of my journey as a practitioner.

My philosophy is simple: great design with a clear purpose comes from focused thinking and disciplined execution. Architecture is not just about ideas, but about carrying them through to create spaces that genuinely work for the people who use them.

Designing with intent means beginning every project with clarity about function, feeling, and the life it should support. Designing with focus means prioritising what truly matters and removing the unnecessary. Discipline ensures those ideas survive challenges and become spaces people can rely on.

How will AI shape the future of architecture and design in Philippines?

I believe the next chapter of Philippine architecture and interior design will be strongly shaped by artificial intelligence and data-driven design. Design practices are moving towards systems that are more generative, predictive, and performance-based.

Tasks that once took days or weeks will soon be handled almost instantly through intelligent tools, making design faster, more agile, and highly responsive.

Design will become increasingly adaptive, with concepts tested, optimized, and refined in real time. Buildings will no longer be static objects but intelligent systems that respond to users and their environment. Beyond speed, this shift will influence the profession itself, inspiring new design movements and a new generation of architects.

It will encourage experimentation, deeper discovery, and a better understanding of how space affects everyday life, shaping more responsive and meaningful environments in the years ahead.
