Please provide an overview of your educational background and past industry experiences that have contributed to your expertise. I have an educational background in business studies from Loreto Convent, Delhi. I pursued psychology honours at Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi. Later, I completed a postgraduate degree in hotel and tourism management at HTMI, Switzerland, and a master's in Hospitality Management in the UK. Additionally, I attended the General Managers Program at Cornell University and received spa management training from the Chiva Som Academy in Thailand. With over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, my diverse education and expertise have shaped my professional journey. As the only qualified hotelier in my Punjabi business family from New Delhi, my journey has been a cinematic one. With training in Switzerland, including an apprenticeship with renowned chef RenneFallet in F&B, I joined forces with my father and brother to establish Suryavilas Luxury Resort and Spa from scratch. My parents, especially my visionary father, provided unwavering love, support, and trust, empowering me to overcome challenges and continuously improve. Together with my brother, we carry forward our father's legacy, venturing into new opportunities. Wellness is an exciting focus at Suryavilas, where we strive to create exceptional experiences.

What are the major challenges leaders in the hospitality industry face today? How do you overcome these challenges?

The key challenge for leaders in the hospitality industry today is finding a balance between the wide range of lodging options available to customers while meeting their high expectations. Rising operational costs, including labour, energy, and food prices, also pose significant obstacles. To overcome these challenges, we prioritize cross-training our staff to enhance their skills and flexibility, optimize labour costs through effective scheduling, and actively manage energy usage through efficient practices and regular audits. We minimize food wastage by offering menu options that share ingredients.

How do you stay updated with the latest industry trends and changes to ensure your alignment with them?

Staying well-informed about the ever-changing trends in the hospitality industry is crucial for maintaining credibility and adapting to the future. I make it a daily priority to stay updated on global hospitality news and developments, immersing myself in reading and networking with industry professionals. By actively engaging with customers and being open to feedback, I embrace opportunities for growth and improvement. Monitoring business statistics and keeping a vigilant eye on competitors further enhances my understanding and preparedness in this dynamic industry. What are your thoughts on women in leadership roles in the Indian hospitality sector? How can the industry increase women's participation in decision-making positions?

Promoting women's leadership in the Indian hospitality sector is crucial. Currently, women hold only a small percentage of senior management positions. To address this, we actively recruit and train more women employees, foster a women-friendly culture, and ensure gender equality through policies and regulations. We remove biases against working mothers and offer flexibility and equal compensation. Our aim is to break barriers and create more opportunities for women in decision-making roles.
