In the medical device sector, the role of the Chief Operating Officer has evolved from overseeing day-to-day operations to shaping long-term business strategy, innovation, and organizational resilience. As industries are becoming technology-driven and highly regulated, it demands leaders who can make a significant impact by bringing a balanced approach that combines strategic foresight, operational discipline, collaborative leadership, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
Their growing presence in manufacturing reflects not only a shift toward inclusive leadership but also the recognition that operational excellence is built as much on people, systems, and innovation as it is on processes and performance. Dr. Rupali Kale Tandulwadkar exemplifies this evolving model of operational leadership through her dual leadership roles as COO of Eon Curemed and Executive Director; Quality and Regulatory at Eon Meditech, where she drives strategic business initiatives, operational excellence, and robust quality and regulatory practices across the medical device sector.

Having a strong background in healthcare and management, what inspired your transition into operational leadership, and how has that journey influenced your leadership philosophy?
My career started in research and development and gradually expanded into regulatory affairs, product development, and manufacturing management. Over the past 15 years, I have gained hands-on experience across the entire product lifecycle, from concept development to commercialization. I expanded my expertise into operations, business strategies and mandatory compliance of regulatory affairs. Working across these diverse functions gave me a holistic understanding of the medical device lifecycle and reinforced my belief that successful healthcare innovation requires seamless integration of science, compliance, manufacturing, regulation and commercial strategy. Today, my leadership philosophy is rooted in integrity, practical problem-solving, and empowering teams to think beyond, keeping performance and patient safety central to every decision.
The Medical Device sector is witnessing a major shift toward precision manufacturing, compliance automation, and patient-centric solutions. How is Eon Meditech adapting to these evolving industry expectations?
The medical device industry is undergoing one of its most transformative phases, driven by artificial intelligence, digital health technologies, automation, and increasingly complex global regulatory expectations. I believe organizations must embrace these developments not simply as technological advancements but as strategic opportunities to improve efficiency, strengthen quality systems, and accelerate innovation.
AI has tremendous potential to support regulatory intelligence, quality management, predictive analytics, and data-driven decision-making. However, technology should complement and not replace scientific judgment, regulatory expertise, and practical experience. We adapt to it by combining emerging technologies with robust quality systems and patient-centric design, which ultimately can develop globally compliant medical devices.
In medical device manufacturing, maintaining speed without compromising quality is often challenging. How do you create a balance between operational efficiency, innovation, and stringent quality standards?
I believe speed and quality should complement each other rather than compete. Quality should be embedded into every stage of product development through well-established quality management systems. This approach minimizes rework, improves efficiency, and enables innovation without compromising compliance.
Equally important is cross-functional collaboration. Each individual needs to contribute unique perspectives that strengthen decision-making and accelerate product development. For me, operational excellence is about building practical systems that consistently deliver innovative, safe, and globally compliant medical devices while remaining agile in a rapidly evolving industry.
Employee capability and process discipline play a major role in manufacturing success. What strategies do you follow to build high-performing teams and ensure operational accountability across departments?
People are the foundation of every successful organization. While systems and technology are essential, it is ultimately the knowledge, commitment, and collaboration of people that determine long-term success. I strongly believe in creating an environment where individuals understand not only their responsibilities but also the impact their work has on product quality, patient safety, and organizational growth.
My leadership approach focuses on continuous learning, competency development, transparent communication, and empowering teams to take ownership of their work. I encourage cross-functional collaboration because the most effective solutions often emerge when diverse perspectives come together. At the same time, I believe leaders should remain approachable mentors who inspire innovation while maintaining accountability. Investing in people creates resilient organizations that can successfully adapt to technological advancements, regulatory changes, and evolving market expectations.
The industry continues to face challenges such as fluctuating raw material availability, changing regulations, and global supply chain uncertainties. What has been one of the most complex operational situations you have managed, and what did it teach you as a leader?
One of the most challenging situations I encountered involved a disruption in the supply of a critical component required for a validated medical device. Such situations have the potential to affect manufacturing continuity, regulatory commitments, and patient access. Fortunately, because robust supplier qualification processes, contingency planning, and risk management systems had already been established, we were able to respond proactively while maintaining quality and compliance.
The experience reinforced one of the most valuable lessons in my career, that resilience is built long before a crisis occurs. Strong leadership is about anticipating risks, preparing for uncertainty, and developing systems that enable organizations to respond quickly without compromising quality or patient safety. Every challenge presents an opportunity to strengthen processes, improve decision-making, and build more resilient organizations.
Sustainability and responsible manufacturing are becoming important business priorities globally. How do you see environmentally conscious manufacturing practices shaping the future of the medical device sector?
Sustainability has become an integral part of responsible healthcare innovation. The future of medical device manufacturing will depend on organizations adopting environmentally conscious practices that improve efficiency while minimizing their environmental footprint. Resource optimization, waste reduction, energy-efficient manufacturing, sustainable sourcing, and environmentally responsible packaging are increasingly becoming business imperatives rather than optional initiatives.
I also believe sustainability extends beyond environmental responsibility. It includes building resilient quality systems, developing products that deliver long-term value, and creating organizations capable of adapting to changing healthcare needs. Responsible innovation, supported by sound regulatory practices and efficient operations, will be a key driver of future growth within the medical device industry.
Being featured as “COO of the Year 2026 – Manufacturing Industry,” what message would you like to share with aspiring professionals, especially women leaders, who aim to build successful careers in healthcare and manufacturing operations?
Receiving this recognition is both an honour and a reminder that meaningful achievements are built through continuous learning, perseverance, and the collective efforts of the teams we work with. Awards acknowledge milestones, but the greatest satisfaction comes from contributing to healthcare innovations that improve lives and from mentoring others to reach their potential.
My message to aspiring professionals, especially women leaders, is to believe in their capabilities, embrace challenges, and never hesitate to take risks. Growth often happens when we step beyond our comfort zones and accept new responsibilities. Leadership requires resilience, adaptability, continuous learning, and courage. True success comes from taking responsibility, learning from setbacks, and leading with integrity.
