Dr. Nirmal Bhasin: Turning Perseverance into a Fertility Care Legacy
Dr. Nirmal Bhasin
Founder, Jannee Fertility Centre
Fertility centres today represent far more than spaces for assisted reproductive procedures. They have become multidisciplinary ecosystems where reproductive science, embryology, diagnostics, counselling, technology, and personalised patient care converge.
As fertility journeys become increasingly complex, the role of clinical leaders has expanded beyond medical expertise to include ethical decision-making, patient advocacy, innovation, and the ability to build trust during deeply personal phases of patients’ lives.
Women leaders, in particular, are bringing a distinctive combination of clinical insight, empathy, resilience, and purpose to this evolving landscape, shaping fertility care around both scientific outcomes and human experiences.
One such leader is Dr. Nirmal Bhasin, Founder, Jannee Fertility Centre, whose professional journey reflects perseverance, continuous learning, and an unwavering commitment to ethical reproductive care. A foreign medical graduate from Minsk State Medical Institute in Belarus, Dr. Bhasin completed her medical education in 1991.
After returning to India, her aspirations for postgraduate training in gynaecology were interrupted by significant family responsibilities, including her father’s battle with cancer. Moving to Chandigarh, she began practising independently in 1995 through a small clinic, gaining experience in routine gynaecology and deliveries.
Her professional trajectory changed decisively in 2000 when she joined Chandigarh’s first IVF centre. Despite having no formal background in infertility or ultrasound, her honesty, willingness to learn, and determination opened the door to reproductive medicine.
Over the years, she developed expertise in ultrasound, infertility treatment, and embryology, eventually becoming the first embryologist in Punjab and Chandigarh trained in ICSI. Her hands-on training and successful first human ICSI result marked a defining milestone in her career.
I believe the future of reproductive healthcare must combine technology with humanity and affordability
After leaving her position in 2004, Dr. Bhasin rebuilt her practice independently, working as a freelance embryologist before establishing her own infertility practice. Her journey culminated in the founding of Jannee Fertility Centre in 2008, transforming years of challenges and experience into a patient-focused institution grounded in clinical expertise, resilience, and ethical fertility care. Let’s read on.
As a clinician and entrepreneur, what leadership principles and personal values guide your approach to building a trusted fertility centre?
Honesty, ethics and resilience have been the foundations of my leadership. From the beginning of my career, I have believed in being transparent about what I know and what I still need to learn. That honesty builds trust with both patients and colleagues.
My personal journey has also taught me to remain resilient through uncertainty and setbacks. At Jannee, I believe every patient deserves to be heard, acknowledged and respected. Fertility treatment involves significant emotional and financial expectations, so compassion must remain central to clinical care. I also ensure that technology or commercial considerations never override what is genuinely beneficial for the patient.
How are advances in reproductive medicine and increasing patient awareness reshaping fertility care, and how is Jannee adapting?
Reproductive medicine has evolved tremendously since I entered the field, with technologies becoming more sophisticated and patient awareness increasing. However, I believe the real advancement lies in using these technologies selectively and intelligently rather than offering everything to everyone. At Jannee, we continuously upgrade our knowledge and practices while assessing each patient's age, medical history and reproductive circumstances before recommending treatment.
Our approach is personalised and clinically driven. We are also embracing digital platforms to improve awareness and education. Although we have traditionally relied on personal interaction and word-of-mouth rather than advertising, our presence on platforms such as Instagram and YouTube allows us to reach and educate more people.
Could you elaborate on Jannee Fertility Centre’s core clinical services and personalised approach to fertility treatment?
Our approach begins with understanding the individual rather than treating fertility as a standardised process. We are a pioneer in third party reproduction (donor program) and Surrogacy within the legal framework. Jannee provides fertility evaluation and assisted reproductive treatments, including IVF and IUI, along with specialised reproductive care based on individual clinical requirements.
My experience in both infertility treatment and embryology has helped me understand how closely clinical and laboratory processes are connected. I also believe that treatment success cannot be measured only through numbers. Patients should understand why a treatment is recommended, its realistic possibilities and available alternatives. Therefore, we focus on personalised decision-making, clear communication and ensuring that patients remain informed and supported throughout their fertility journey.
How does Jannee integrate diagnostics, laboratory expertise, counselling and clinical support to deliver holistic fertility care?
My experience as a clinician and embryologist has taught me that successful fertility treatment requires an integrated approach. Clinical decisions, diagnostics, laboratory practices and patient communication must work together seamlessly. My extensive embryology experience has also taught me the importance of precision, consistency and patience, particularly while working with delicate reproductive cells.
At the same time, patients need emotional support because fertility treatment can be an intense and uncertain experience. We therefore try to ensure that patients are never treated merely as cases or numbers. They should feel heard, informed and supported, with their concerns addressed throughout the treatment process.
What is your long-term vision for Jannee Fertility Centre and its contribution to reproductive healthcare in India?
I envision Jannee as a centre of excellence providing world-class fertility care while remaining firmly grounded in ethical practice. I want it to be recognised as a place where patients are acknowledged, heard and respected, and where ethics are never compromised. Accessibility is equally important to me, and we are exploring ways to provide greater financial support, including working towards low-cost IVF.
I believe the future of reproductive healthcare must combine technology with humanity and affordability. I would also like greater collaboration within the fertility fraternity, with professionals working together rather than simply competing. Ultimately, our shared priority must always be the patient’s wellbeing.
