Women Leaders on the Rise in the Indian Logistics Industry

By: Rachita Sharma, Managing Editor | Thursday, 17 October 2024

The logistics industry is the backbone of the Indian economy. It connects every corner of the country and enables businesses to go beyond their vicinities. Every major industry such as FMCG, retail, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, industrial goods and e-commerce, depends on the logistics sector for functioning. Owing to reliance of the various industries, the logistics industry is expected to see a revenue rise of 6-9 percent year on year.

The logistics industry is also known to the male-dominated. Until 2010, women formed only eight percent of the logistics workforce globally. Given the erratic work hours, harsh work conditions, preconceived notions about gender roles etc have actively discouraged women from foraying into the field and also from the industry to pursuing more women.

But in today’s world diversity and inclusion are cornerstones of any successful venture. Onboarding more women is said to improve business performance.

The past few years have seen the industry actively trying to improve its gender imbalance. The female workforce in the global workforce has increased to 20 percent in 2018. India has also made a marked improvement, with the number increasing to almost 15 percent.

It is also important to note that women are no longer confined to basic roles, but are also taking up tougher roles and even taking up leadership positions within the logistics sector.

Take Jassi Alva, Director, Maxim Shipping for instance. Jassi’s unwavering determination and exceptional skill set have significantly contributed to the company's trajectory towards success. Under her leadership, firms have not only navigated complex challenges but has also achieved remarkable growth, earning the trust and satisfaction of clients around the globe. Her strategic vision and hands-on approach have been instrumental in driving the company's success and establishing a solid reputation in the logistics sector.

Lovely Mehra, Director, AWL India is another women leader on the rise in Indian logistics. Lovely is the Director of AWL India, where she leverages her extensive expertise in logistics and supply chain management to drive innovation and operational excellence. With a strong commitment to sustainability and customer satisfaction, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the company's strategic direction.
