Tamil Nadu's Concerted Efforts towards Creating a Diverse Workforce
By: Rachita Sharma, Managing Editor | Tuesday, 12 December 2023
Financial independence is a crucial ingredient for women’s empowerment. Giving women equal work opportunities and work environment must be the prerogative of every government. The Indian government has taken it upon themselves to empower women across the country and provide them ample work opportunities.
Other than the central government’s efforts, various state governments have also been embroiled in strategies and policies to empower women and bring more women into the workforce.
Take for instance the Tamil Nadu governments constant efforts to empower women in the Southern state. In 2022, the government announced its plans to reach out to 10,000 women, who were earlier employed. These women had either quit their jobs to take care of the family and due to lack of mobility. The government envisions giving these women a second shot at building a career.
Manufacturing, which is considered a male bastion has also seen an increase in TN women participating in the field. Palanivel Thiaga, TN’s I&B minister stated that 42 percent of the women in the Indian manufacturing sector are from Tamil Nadu.
He also highlighted that the TN government has increase female government employees’ maternity leave from nine months to 12 months.
Efforts such as these and many more showcase the state’s vision to create an inclusive and diverse workforce in the state.
