Women in Healthcare: The Backbone of Global Healthcare
By: Rachita Sharma, Managing Editor | Friday, 19 June 2026
Women are the backbone of healthcare, yet their greatest impact is often seen when they lead from the front.
Although women make up nearly 70% of the global health workforce, their leadership remains one of healthcare's most powerful untapped resources.
Women play a crucial role in healthcare leadership, bringing unique perspectives that help shape more inclusive, effective, and patient-focused healthcare systems. As a significant part of the healthcare workforce, their presence in leadership positions ensures that decisions and policies better reflect the realities faced by both healthcare professionals and the communities they serve.
Women leaders often foster teamwork, open communication, and a compassionate approach to care, all of which contribute to better patient experiences and outcomes. They are also strong advocates for important issues such as maternal health, reproductive healthcare, and research that addresses gender-specific health needs. Beyond their direct contributions, they serve as inspiring role models, encouraging more women to pursue leadership roles in medicine, public health, and healthcare management.
Despite these contributions, women remain underrepresented in leadership positions. While women make up nearly 70% of the global health workforce, they hold only about 25% of senior leadership roles. Increasing female representation in leadership is not just a matter of equity, it is essential for building stronger, more innovative, and more responsive healthcare systems.
The current edition of Women Entrepreneurs Review magazine spotlights women healthcare leaders from across Asia. Read in-depth conversations with women healthcare leaders to know more about their journeys, success mantras and more.
