Design and architecture hold the magical power to stir something deep within those who lay their eyes upon them.

Be it the grandeur of globally recognized monuments, such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul or Taj Mahal in Agra, India; or the quiet elegance of a beautifully designed space at the corner of your street, beautiful architecture and design inspires awe.

Design also speaks volumes about their creators. Looking at the Sistine Chapel ceiling painted in fresco by Michelangelo, one gets up close and personal with the iconic artist. Similarly, while walking into an impeccably done home of an acquaintance, we get a glimpse into their personality, likes-dislikes and a lot more.

Therefore, it would not be an exaggeration to term design & interior as a reflection of its creator.

In the current edition of WER magazine, we dive deep into the expertise of women architecture and design leaders from the Philippines. They share with us their professional journey, inspirations, creative process and more.

One of the featured leaders is Jenny Mae Casilang-Briones. She is a visionary architect and Principal Architect at CMJ Design and is known for blending design excellence with execution, creating refined, purposeful spaces rooted in lifestyle, culture, and lasting impact.

Talking about the key areas of inspiration, she says, “Influenced by history and cultural narratives, I believe spaces should embody memory and purpose rather than exist as mere structures. My design language balances nature, space, and human interaction, using earthy tones, natural materials, and rich textures.”

We also indulged in an in-depth conversation featuring Charina Amanda Buscaino-Javier, the principal architect and founder of Skala Architects, a firm recognized for its careful, context-driven designs that emphasize function, human experience, and sustainability.

She talks about her work process and explains, “The process begins by establishing the design intent and purpose, ensuring each project has a strong reason for being what it is. Experience and function are prioritized before form, so spaces work effectively before they aim to impress.”

These women designers and architects are creating living spaces that blend modern needs with classic designs. When form meets function, beautiful spaces are created and this is what makes them unique.
