April's Essence of Growth Mirrored in Women Leader's Success Stories
By: Rachita Sharma, Managing Editor | Wednesday, 22 April 2026
The month of April is traditionally symbolic of growth, new-bloom and a renewed vigour. Derived from the Latin word aperire which roughly translates to ‘to open’, this month is all about planting new seeds and stepping towards progress.
Across India different cultures also celebrate new years in April. For Bengalis it is ‘Poila Boishak’; while Kerala celebrates Vishu, marking the Malayalam New Year. The names and celebration rituals might differ, yet the symbolism remains the same – a new beginning.
This April India is also making strides in a new direction, empowering women to become a stronger part of the political landscape. The Indian government introduced the Women’s Reservation Bill, which was well on its way to implementation.
However, the deep political divide caused the Constitution Amendment Bill (which would have implemented the Women’s Representation Bill) to fail the floor test on April 17. Failing to garner the requisite two-thirds majority, the bill was supported by 298 members voting in its favour while 230 voting against it.
While political experts have pointed out to several challenges pertaining to lack of an independent quota of OBC, SC and ST women. Others have also questioned the timing of the bill and the political motivations behind it.
However, the fact of the matter remains that women continue to be grossly underrepresented in the political sphere, much like in other aspects of life. Only affirmative action can uplift women’s representation and the women’s reservation bill is one piece of that puzzle.
Amidst the underrepresentation, existing leaders need to be highlighted and celebrated all the more. Fuelled by the same thought, current edition of the WER magazine presents to readers the inspiring stories of women leaders from diverse industries from across India.
In this edition read about successful women professionals from compliance & risk management, corporate law, L&D, IVF among others. We also narrate the professional success stories of women CXOs who are leading critical functions such as marketing, people leadership, independent directorship and much more.
From practical leadership lessons to insightful industry anecdotes, these stories bring the respective women leaders’ journeys alive. In essence these stories champion growth, development, new beginnings and persistence – aligning with the spirit of April.
