Women's Entrepreneurship in India: Opportunities, Challenges & Future Outlook

By: Ayushi Dutta, Senior Correspondent

Women’s entrepreneurship in India is gaining momentum. Explore the growth story, funding opportunities, government schemes, key challenges, and the future outlook for women founders in this comprehensive guide.

The Indian entrepreneurial ecosystem is undergoing a defining transformation, with women entrepreneurs increasingly moving from the sidelines of enterprise to the centre of economic growth. From women-led MSMEs in smaller towns to technology-driven startups attracting global capital, women entrepreneurs are building businesses, creating employment and reshaping traditional industries across India. The scale of this shift is becoming increasingly visible: women now own an estimated 20-22 per cent of India’s formally registered MSMEs, while women-led startups are emerging across sectors ranging from beauty and healthcare to technology, food, sustainability and financial services.

The momentum is equally evident at the grassroots level. In Odisha alone, registrations of women entrepreneurs on the Udyam portal rose from roughly 2.8 lakh in 2024-25 to more than four lakh in 2025-26, reflecting a 44 per cent year-on-year increase. At the national level, more than 7,000 active women-led startups have collectively raised over $26 billion, while nearly half of startups recognised under the Startup India initiative have at least one woman on their board.

Yet, behind these encouraging numbers lies a more complex picture marked by unequal access to capital, limited formalisation, unpaid care responsibilities and gaps in representation.

The opportunity is therefore not only about increasing the number of women starting businesses. It is about creating an ecosystem where women-owned enterprises can formalise, access capital, enter new markets, scale sustainably and participate meaningfully in decision-making. As India advances towards its Viksit Bharat @2047 vision, understanding this transformation becomes increasingly important.
