Queens of the Board: Meet 5 Rising Female Chess Stars of India

By: Ayushi Dutta, Correspondent

Chess is an age-old game of strategy and intellectual prowess. With its origins dating back to the 6th Century AD in India, the game’s modern version was refined and popularized in Europe. In contemporary times, chess has emerged as a beloved sport that has its own superstar players and a loyal fan following. However, men have largely dominated the game of modern chess, irrespective of the country.

Once dominated by a few celebrated male grandmasters, chess in India is now witnessing a quiet revolution led by a new generation of focused and fiercely talented young women. These rising queens of the 64 squares are not only mastering the game but redefining its landscape, breaking stereotypes, and inspiring the nation. From small-town prodigies to digitally trained grandmasters-in-the-making, they are checkmating doubts with their strategized sharp knight's move.

India's women chess pioneers have brought true depth to the story. Legendary women role models include Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi, India's first Woman Grandmaster in 2001, to Koneru Humpy, Youngest female Grandmaster winning the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2024-25, whose flair and finesse have dazzled boards across continents. These women have carried the weight of expectations with grace and grit, claiming medals and uplifting India's presence on the global stage.

These legendary women have not only shattered stereotypes but also brought home international glory, paving the way for future generations of women chess players. As a result, we see scores of young women not only taking up chess but also mastering it.

The WER team lists out five such young women who are the future of Indian Chess, taking it to international heights. Lets meet these prodigies.
