The Week That Was: Indian Women Empowerment News Overview (11 - 16 April)

ATHULYA & SOORYA BECOMES FINALIST FOR MANORAMA SPORTS STAR 2020-21

The two female finalists for Kerala's most prestigious sports award, Manorama Sports Star 2020-21, have been announced by Malayala Manorama in collaboration with Santa Monica Study Abroad.

K V Athulya (football) and S Soorya (vollyball) are the two final contenders decided by online/SMS voting.

They were among the six finalists chosen by a panel that included Olympian T C Yohannan, journalist and sports pundit N S Madhavan, and former cricketer and coach P Balachandran for the prestigious prize. After receiving the most votes, Athulya and Soorya advanced to the final round. Sanju Samson (cricket), Sandra Babu (athletics), and Nihal Sarin (chess) were among those who did not make the cut.

BRICS CCI WE HOSTS ANNUAL WOMEN'S SUMMIT

BRICS CCI WE, the BRICS Chamber of Commerce and Industry's women's vertical, which works to promote active trade, commerce, and entrepreneurship between the BRICS and other friendly nations, held its 2nd Annual Summit today in the capital on the theme "Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Women Empowerment." The Summit's Chief Guest was Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, Hon'ble Minister of State for Culture, Government of India. HE Mrs. Mariana Pacheco Montes, Ambassador of Colombia to India, and Ms. Ria A Sital, Charge d' Affaires, Embassy of the Republic of Suriname to India, also attended the Summit.

MORE THAN 300 ONE-STOP CENTERS WOULD OPEN SOON TO HELP WOMEN AFFLICTED BY VIOLENCE: SMRITI IRANI

Smriti Irani, the Union Minister for Women and Child Development, announced  that 300 new One Stop Centres (OSCs) will be opened across the country soon to help women who have been victims of abuse.

Women's health and empowerment, she noted, have become ingrained in the central government's programmes and policies.

The minister said 704 One Stop Centres are currently operational in the country, and 70 lakh women in distress have received support from governments – both the Centre and states together – during a zonal summit of states and diverse stakeholders from the western region in Mumbai.

INDIA IS ON THE VERGE OF A 'FLEXIDUS,' WITH MANY WOMEN QUITTING JOBS OWING TO A LACK OF FLEXIBILITY: LINKEDIN  

LinkedIn, the leading online professional network, released its latest consumer research on Tuesday, based on 2,266 respondents in India, to identify the problems women face at work.

According to the study, employers' attitudes regarding flexible working and career breaks are preventing women from requesting more flexibility and re-entering the workforce.

According to LinkedIn's research, 8 out of 10 working women (83%) have realised they want to work more flexibly as a result of the pandemic's impact.

According to the study, 72% of working women reject employment that don't enable them to work flexibly, and 70% have already quit or are considering resigning because they weren't given the right flexible policies.

FOR WOMEN AND TRANS WOMEN, DSEU LAUNCHES A RESIDENTIAL SOFTWARE PROGRAMMING COURSE

The Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU) announced the commencement of a residential software programming programme on Tuesday in an effort to make skilling aspirational, accessible, and inclusive for women and trans women.

The university said in a statement that the fully-funded residential 20-month advanced diploma course in software programming will be held in conjunction with non-profit organisation NavGurukul.

Atishi, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Education and MLA from Kalkaji seat, inaugurated the programme, which had 84 pupils in its inaugural batch.

MG MOTOR INDIA PARTNERS WITH GOLFER TVESA MALIK AS PART OF ITS EFFORT TO EMPOWER WOMEN

As part of its effort to empower women and assist them in sports, MG Motor India established a partnership with professional golfer Tvesa Malik.

She will represent the MG Motor brand in numerous tournaments and competitions as a result of the partnership, according to the firm.

The three-year partnership with Malik represents MG's commitment to nurturing and developing emerging talent, according to the statement.

Udit Malhotra, MG Motor India's Head of Marketing, stated, "India is a land rich in talent and home to a variety of popular sports, including golf.

OVER 1,000 FEMALE CANDIDATES ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND CAREERNET'S ANNUAL 'CAREER FAIR FOR WOMEN'

On April 16, 2022, Careernet, India's premier talent solutions provider, will host their second edition of 'Career Fair for Women,' a virtual career fair through Careernet Prism, beginning at 11 a.m. The virtual diversity hiring event, which is driven by Syfe and co-powered by Hitachi, is being organised by Careernet Prism to enable women discover interesting job options with top inclusive organisations dedicated to moving female talent forward.

Syfe, Hitachi, Sapiens, Mobelium, Lam Research, and Roche, among the collaborating organisations, will provide a platform for working women professionals, women wishing to relaunch their careers, and women from the PwD and LGBTQ+ communities to explore over 100 tech and non-tech employment options.

INCLUSIVITY EXTENDS BEYOND FEMALE JUDGES: NV RAMANA, CJI

After facilitating the appointment of a record three women Supreme Court judges last year, Chief Justice N V Ramana said on Friday that more women judges do not reflect true inclusivity, which can only be achieved if all segments of society are adequately represented in the judiciary.

CJI Ramana told Telangana's judicial officers that the High Court chief justices should speed up the process of filling judicial vacancies and ensure that all parts of society are represented while recommending names for appointment as HC judges.
