Infertility is a growing concern for Indian women, driven by changing lifestyles, delayed pregnancies, and various health conditions. It used to be referred to as a taboo subject in Indian households but gradually gained attention in the changing dynamics. On average 10-15 per cent of Indian couples face infertility issues, with women bearing societal and emotional pressures. Factors like PCOS, obesity, and late marriages contribute to the issue. Despite this, advancements in fertility care, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and holistic approaches, are providing hope and reducing societal stigma, making fertility care a critical part of women's healthcare.

Fertility: A Rising Concern in India

According to a study, 8.9 per cent of 570 women in Central India had primary infertility specifically in the age group 15-49 years, a lower rate than reported trends in developing countries. The WHO reported that the primary infertility prevalence in India ranges from 3.9 per cent to 16.8 per cent, with a median prevalence of 9 per cent. Another study by Boivin et al.'s large population survey found varying rates i.e. 3.5 per cent to 16.7 per cent in developed and 6.9 per cent to 9.3 per cent in less-developed nations that included women aged 20-44 and married or living in a consensual union. The emotional toll of infertility is significant, with many women experiencing depression, anxiety, and marital stress.
