As industry leaders, women are breaking barriers, shattering glass ceilings, and inspiring future generations. Their ability to navigate challenges, solve complex problems, and make informed decisions is transforming industries and driving positive change. One such women leader bringing fresh insights and perspectives to traditional industries, challenging the status quo, and driving innovation is Nilofar Chhatriwala, Director, Mountire Machinery & Components. Let’s hear more from her in this interview snippet.

Can you describe the industry experience you bring to the table and explain how it has enhanced your abilities as a business leader?

Following the completion of my Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science in 2012, I engaged in a one-year tenure as a software developer. Subsequently, in 2015, I assumed the position of a system administrator within my parent's company, all while actively participating in a work-integrated learning program. This immersive exposure to the industrial sector significantly expanded my comprehension of business operations and ignited my fascination with hardware, tools, machinery, and industrial products. By closely collaborating with various aspects of the business and acquiring knowledge through practical experience, I have gained invaluable insights that have profoundly influenced my leadership style and aptitude for making informed decisions in my present venture.

Tell us about Mountire Machinery & Components and the various responsibilities you shoulder as the Director for the company.

Founded in 2020, our company has quickly become a well-known leader in the field of custom design and manufacturing of Buckets & Attachments, Heavy Engineering, Material Handling Equipment, PEB & Structurals. We specialize in Steel Fabrication, ensuring the highest level of results through a meticulous approach. To maximize efficiency, productivity, and sustainability, we have introduced a unique concept called Manufacturing as a Service (MaaS). This model allows us to utilize the idle capacities of multiple partner manufacturers, offering flexible and scalable solutions that cater to the evolving needs of our clients.

As a co-Founder, my responsibilities encompass overseeing product development, managing operations, and setting our strategic direction. I am also actively involved in our company's digital marketing efforts. This entails effectively communicating our value proposition and reaching our target audience through various online channels and marketing strategies. Our aim is to build brand awareness, cultivate strong customer relationships, and drive business growth. Furthermore, I am dedicated to creating a supportive and inclusive work environment for our team members. I believe in empowering them to contribute their unique skills and perspectives, fostering collaboration and innovation.

What, in your opinion, are some of the most demanding aspects of being a business leader in today's business environment? How do you tackle these obstacles?

Being a business leader in today's business climate comes with various challenges. These include the need to keep up with rapid technological advancements, effectively manage diverse teams, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. To overcome these roadblocks, I actively strive to stay updated on industry trends and developments, recognizing the importance of being well-informed. I place a strong emphasis on continuous learning and invest in my own personal and professional development by engaging in ongoing education, attending relevant workshops and seminars, and seeking opportunities for skill enhancement. Moreover, I actively foster a collaborative company culture that encourages open communication and promotes innovation. By creating an environment where diverse perspectives are valued and ideas are freely shared, I tap into the collective intelligence of my team. Lastly, I prioritize my personal well-being and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Recognizing the importance of self-care, I make it a point to allocate time for myself and my family.

Tell us about the top three milestones you have achieved throughout your professional journey?

Firstly, I successfully made the transition from a software developer to a system administrator while participating in a work-integrated learning program. This experience allowed me to expand my knowledge and skills within the industry, broadening my expertise and enhancing my career prospects. Secondly, I navigated the responsibilities of both professional and personal life, including raising my first child, while also providing ad-hoc marketing support for clients. This period taught me valuable lessons in adaptability and effective time management, enabling me to fulfill my obligations and balance multiple priorities.

"For aspiring women leaders & entrepreneurs, i would say embrace the journey & the challenges that come with balancing personal & professional life"

Lastly, I co-founded Mountire Machinery & Components amidst the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic and the birth of my second child. Despite the obstacles, I demonstrated resilience and determination by pursuing my entrepreneurial passion and establishing a successful company.

What, in your view, characterizes you as a leader? What guiding principles have led to your success?

As a leader, I embody a harmonious blend of personal and professional pursuits, maintaining an optimistic outlook, and embracing adaptability. My mantra for success is rooted in resilience, learning from challenges, and empowering those within my sphere to flourish and achieve greatness. I prioritize leading by example, nurturing a supportive work environment, and inspiring my team to unlock their full potential.

Drawing from your personal experience, what advice/message will you give to aspiring women leaders and entrepreneurs?

For aspiring women leaders and entrepreneurs, I would say embrace the journey and the challenges that come with balancing personal and professional life. Build a support system that helps you stay focused and motivated, and surround yourself with mentors and peers who can offer guidance and encouragement. Keep yourself updated on industry trends and be prepared to pivot when necessary. Maintain a positive mindset and approach both successes and setbacks as opportunities for growth. Recognize your achievements, learn from your mistakes, and use these experiences to continuously improve and progress.
