Ophthalmologists play a crucial role in advancing eye health and enhancing the quality of life for their patients. They diagnose and treat vision-related issues, from common refractive errors to complex conditions like cataracts and glaucoma. Dr Vasantha Gowri's journey into medicine was fueled by an early fascination with biology and a deep curiosity about the human body. The ambition to practice microsurgery, a complex discipline that fascinated her, drove her to focus on Ophthalmology after receiving her MBBS.

She started her profession in a small 10x10 clinic and moved into a 2000-square-foot facility with an operating room and cutting-edge equipment as her practice developed. In addition to her surgical expertise, she placed a high priority on community service by planning screening camps to promote adult and student eye health. Today, Dr Vasantha is committed to changing lives via improved eye health and preventive treatment, serving as a source of hope in her community.

Engaging in an interaction with Women Entrepreneurs Review magazine, Dr Vasantha shares the details of her journey as one of the leading Ophthalmologist in the country. Let’s read about it.

Could you share your experience as an Ophthalmologist and surgeon, highlighting your primary areas of expertise?

As a general Ophthalmologist who focuses on the anterior segment, I am especially passionate about treating glaucoma and cataracts. My focus lately has been on young adult's and student's eye health, particularly in the wake of COVID-19. Refractive errors among school-aged children have significantly increased due to the rise in gadget use and decreased outside play. Around 20–25 percent of children aged 3–15 suffer from myopia, astigmatism, or hypermetropia.

I have screened over a million school children and organized multiple screening camps in community centres, workplaces, and schools over the last 15 years. I am a big believer in educating people about eye health prevention and encouraging them to make small lifestyle adjustments that can have a big impact on their eyesight. I hope that these initiatives will help the next generation to have a healthier and more distinct vision.

We frequently hold screening camps at local schools because i am passionate about the early detection & treatment of refractive problems

Can you introduce Aadithya Eye Care, and explain how you focus on patient care to ensure positive outcomes?

Aadithya Eye Care has expanded over the course of almost 20 years with a focus on community and preventative Ophthalmology. I regularly see young adults who suffer from computer vision syndrome and eye strain, which are treatable with corrective lenses, lifestyle modifications, and ergonomic tweaks.

I focus on treating glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts in older age groups. We work to provide comprehensive, efficient eye care, assisting patients in enhancing their quality of life and visual health by addressing these problems early and encouraging preventive treatment.

What professional milestones stand out in your career, and what has been your success mantra?

More than 20 years ago, I began my career at a small clinic to lay the groundwork for patient care. After a few years, I moved to a bigger area with an optical department and necessary diagnostic equipment.

The next big step was opening my eye hospital, Aadithya Eye Care, which had five beds, an operating room, and cutting-edge technology for total eye care, including laser treatments, visual field analysis, and retinal imaging. This development has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to better assist my patients and offering me professional fulfillment.

My success mantra has always been to stay true to myself and be persistent. Practicing ethically and being accountable to my conscience have been the cornerstones of my success.

Tell us about your role as an educationist. What inspired you to foray into the sector?

My responsibilities as an educationist includes working as the Correspondent and Director (Innovations & Initiatives) of KRM Schools in Chennai which consists of CBSE, State Board, and International American Curricula school.

My efforts center on making learning a joyful and happy experience for young children. I also provide teachers with the necessary tools and professional development as a coach and counselor, enabling them to become Resource Specialists. I mentor educators in managing student behavior and align teaching practices with the school's mission.

How do you stay aligned with evolving industry practices and trends?

I attend academic conferences, both at the state and national levels, at least twice a year to stay up to date with changing techniques. I also participate actively in the City Ophthalmic Association, a local organization that provides continuing medical education sessions to keep us informed about new developments in technology and treatment approaches.
