Dr Anasuya Threse Innocent: Tech-First Social Entrepreneur Transforming Adversity into Innovation
Dr Anasuya Threse Innocent
Founder & Director, Binaryworld Innovations
Bangalore
True innovation is often achieved through resilience. Dr Anasuya Threse Innocent, a Computer Scientist, Academician, and Technology Entrepreneur, is an inspiring representative of this truth, altering the way technology is used for the benefit of society.
Having spent over 18 years in teaching and research, she turned a personal setback, a spinal cord injury that once left her bedridden, into the turning point that sparked her entrepreneurial journey.
Inspired by generations of service and education in her family, she founded BiniWorld Innovations and, later, BinaryWorld Innovations, two ventures with deep roots in tech, climate tech, and blockchain for sustainability.
Dr Anasuya’s vision is straightforward: to design systems that are transparent, traceable, community-led, people-empowering, and planet-protective.
She continues bridging the gaps between research and real-world innovation as an active core member of the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust (LFDT) India Chapter and as a mentor to the open-source BiniBFT Consensus project proposed by her through BiniWorld.
Hers is a story of courage, conviction, and belief that technology can make all the difference when imbued with purpose and can change lives while building a sustainable future.
What inspired your shift from academia to blockchain entrepreneurship?
Raised by parents who were educators, I excelled academically and began teaching while pursuing my Master’s degree, at Noorul Islam University, and later joining VIT University. My maternal grandfather who was a businessman, philanthropist, and Ayurvedic doctor, taught me that creating jobs is more impactful than charity.
While completing my PhD in Computer Science and Engineering, focusing on Secure Computation, my curiosity to extend security into transparency led me to blockchain, whose principles aligned with my vision.
Circa 2014–2015, I began exploring it and later pursued a one-year course at IIIT-Bangalore during the pandemic.
At 33, a spinal cord injury left me bedridden, but community support reignited my purpose, leading to my first venture, BiniWorld Innovations, followed by BinaryWorld Innovations. As a core member of the Linux Foundation’s LFDT India Chapter, I mentor students and develop BiniBFT Consensus.
Today, as Founder & Director of not just one but two startups, I continue transforming adversity into innovation.
I strongly believe that the best way to give back to society is by creating more jobs, opportunities that uplift many lives, not just one, and with emerging technologies like blockchain and AI, we can open new doors for everyone, including women returning after a break, to excel in their careers
What inspired the creation of BinaryWorld Innovations? What are its key focus areas?
At BiniWorld Innovations, we began by focusing on climate tech, integrating blockchain, IoT, and AI. As demand grew for traceability and ESG solutions, I founded BinaryWorld Innovations as a separate entity dedicated to the energy domain.
Based in Karnataka, the startup has two verticals: one developing energy solutions using emerging technologies, and another focused on academic and research initiatives.
We’re soon launching the International Journal of BinaryWorld Innovations, showcasing technology-driven use cases across sectors. As Founder and Director, I oversee R&D; from innovation and design to system development, integrating hardware and software for complete solutions.
Our mission is to build technologies that drive a green, sustainable, and transparent future, empowering communities through citizen participation and new revenue opportunities.
What challenges have defined your journey? How has resilience guided you?
Building a startup is never easy; it takes more than just interest. I don’t call myself “successful” yet; I’m still growing and learning. Coming from an academic background with no industry experience, I’ve spent four years carving my path.
Establishing a deep-tech venture in blockchain for sustainability has been a journey of learning and balancing innovation with financial stability.
India supports women founders, yet blockchain and climate tech still face skepticism and funding challenges. Building a trustworthy team took time, but I now have a dependable core team.
Overcoming a spinal injury taught me resilience and adaptability.
What principles define your success and guide your journey?
My success mantra is: “Turn adversity into action and purpose into progress”. Guided by the Bhagavad Gita’s “This Too Shall Pass” and Swami Vivekananda’s “Arise, Awake, and stop not till the goal is reached” and the Bible verse "You should use whatever gift you have received to serve others".
I’ve learned to stay grounded through every high and low. Completing my PhD despite a spinal cord injury that once left me unable to walk or speak was a defining milestone.
Founding BiniWorld Innovations, now incubated at IIM Bangalore’s NSRCEL and part of Climate Collective Accelerator, marked another. It’s also recognized by NASSCOM Tech.WE, and StartupTN. I currently serve as Chair of the Healthcare SIG under the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust (LFDT), and also the Lead for Student Society in LFDT India Chapter.
My recognitions include the "Green Innovation for Sustainability", and "Blockchain for Good" awards. I also write on LinkedIn regularly to simplify blockchain concepts and its real-world use cases. My content is now used by universities to aid students’ learning.
For me, growth means uplifting others; driven by purpose, perseverance, and resilience.
How is blockchain, AI, and IoT transforming governance and energy sector in India? What is your roadmap ahead to leverage these technologies for the greater good?
Initiatives like PM Surya Ghar and Digital India Mission need traceable, sustainable solutions, and that’s where blockchain plays a key role. India’s Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) marks a major step toward Web3 innovation. Blockchain, the backbone of Web3, when combined with AI and IoT, unlocks immense real-world potential.
For example, blockchain can make national highways traceable by tracking construction, contractors, and maintenance transparently. Successful blockchain use already exists in CBSE mark sheets and land registries in Karnataka and Telangana.
I’m developing a Distributed Energy Management System for DISCOMS to optimize power use, along with predictive solar health monitoring and carbon credit verification and trading; especially for small-scale producers.
These efforts aim to make sectors like energy, agriculture, and transport more transparent and accountable, creating a climate-positive, citizen-driven ecosystem powered by blockchain, AI, and IoT.
