In this interview, Shalini shares insights into her career journey and architecture industry.

Can you please walk us through your career journey?

The journey was incredibly interesting. Ever since I graduated in 2017, I instilled a strong desire to become an independent architect. As a young person at that time, I was adamant about not wanting to work under anyone else. I craved firsthand experience in the field, seeing my designs come to life. When I graduated, my father advised me to gain some work experience first, to understand the industry better. However, I was resolute in my decision to start my firm. Despite lacking experience, I was determined to learn through freelancing and small projects. My father eventually gave me his blessing, with the caveat that I could return to a job if needed. But I took it as a challenge to prove myself, never intending to go back on my decision. My initial projects, like the boutique in Delhi, provided me with a mix of good and bad experiences, but I persisted. Through references and mentorship, I gradually built up my portfolio and reputation. I decided to establish my identity as Shalini Jain, with the firm name deriving from my initials, SJ. Since then, I've remained steadfast in my vision, never wavering from the path I set out on.

What are the key areas of expertise that you have developed in the design industry?

In my opinion, the primary expertise required to navigate the business aspects of this industry is management. Before anything else, managing various aspects such as labor, clients, contractors, employees, and the team is crucial. Effective business management is the cornerstone of success in this field, and it's the first lesson I learned when stepping into this industry. Secondly, while creativity is undoubtedly important, it must align with current trends. People are often resistant to change, so incorporating creativity within the framework of existing trends is essential. Personally, I've adapted to this approach, ensuring that my creative ideas resonate with prevailing industry trends. Ultimately, the most effective way to run a business in this industry is to go with the flow and seize opportunities as they arise. While showcasing creativity is important, it's equally vital to align with existing trends and choice of the clients, and adapt to the industry's ever-changing landscape.

What are your key roles and responsibilities as the founder of SJ Design Consultants?

As the founder of my firm, I bear a multitude of responsibilities, each crucial to our growth and success. Foremost among these is the imperative to foster the expansion of the company, transforming it into a recognized brand while engaging with esteemed clients. This pursuit of growth stands as a cornerstone of my commitment to the firm. It is incumbent upon me to ensure that each member, from teammates to colleagues, experiences professional advancement alongside the firm's progress. Their growth and fulfillment are integral to our collective journey, and I strive to cultivate an environment where they flourish, both professionally and personally.

What are the challenges you overcame as the founder of the company?

One of the most persistent hurdles I've encountered is the inherent bias against being a female architect. Despite strides toward gender equality, there remains a pervasive misconception that women are ill-suited for the rigors of architectural work, particularly in managing male-dominated construction sites.

This bias manifests in comments and skepticism from clients and industry peers alike, who question my ability to handle the demands of architectural design and site management. Some have even suggested that I confine myself to interior design, relegating the more 'hands-on' aspects of architecture to my male counterparts. I've had to assert my capabilities and resilience repeatedly, challenging outdated stereotypes and asserting my rightful place in the profession. While it's disheartening to encounter such attitudes, I refuse to be deterred, emphasizing that competence knows no gender. Despite these challenges, I remain steadfast in my commitment to excellence, leveraging every opportunity to showcase not only my skills as an architect but also the invaluable contributions that women bring to the field.

What advice would you offer to aspiring women entrepreneurs or business leaders?

Aspiring women entrepreneurs or business leaders should not let societal norms demotivate them. They should forge ahead and pursue their passions without being deterred by naysayers. It's important to prioritize their own happiness and pursue their goals fearlessly. Regardless of gender, they are fully capable of achieving success, so they should continue to work diligently and strive for greatness without limitations.
