Women's Hockey World Cup 2022: Team India knocked out after losing to Spain

The Indian women’s hockey team have been knocked out of the Women’s Hockey World Cup 2022 as they lost 0-1 to Spain on Sunday. Held at the EstadiOlímpic de Terrassa Stadium, India needed a sureshot victory in the crossover match to move ahead of the quarter finals.

The game began to a jittery start and both teams took some time to settle down. Around the eight minuteIndia earned its first penalty corner. Neha took the shot, however could not make much of the opportunity. Spain then launched a counter-attack but Beatriz Perez missed to score by inches. Spain then won back-to-back PCs but were unable to convert it.

In the second quarter both teams won PCs, but were also great at defense as both the goalkeepers strived to keep the score at par (0-0).

In the third quarter India dominated the ball possession but were unable to break the deadlock. Spain, alsoshowcased some good circle penetrations, unfortunately their strikers missed the mark.

In the fourth quarter Spain launched a strong attack but Savitacame to the rescue again. Indian forward line launched a strong attack with Salima and Lalremsiami in the circle but the target remained elusive. Till the very end it looked like the match was headed for a draw, but Spain had a breakthrough in the 57th minute. Clara Ycartcharged into India's circle and took a shot on goal which was blocked bySavita. But, Marta Segu picked up the rebound and put it past India's goalkeeper.

With the match coming to an end in the proceeding minutes, India hopes of winning a medal at the World Cup also ended. Team India will now play Canada on July 12in the 9th to 16th placing match.
