The West Bengal Cabinet has approved the Bhagini Nivedita Scheme, which will provide financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to unmarried women pursuing higher education. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the scheme following a Cabinet meeting, with the initiative aimed at supporting women during their higher education.

Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive Rs 17,000 each in the first and second years of their degree, followed by Rs 16,000 in the third year. This will bring the total financial assistance to Rs 50,000 over the three-year period.

The scheme will be rolled out in West Bengal from January 2027. The announcement comes after several decisions by the state Cabinet such as giving more financial aid to SC and ST students residing in government hostels. The scheme would be rolled out to the state from January 2027, he said.

Key Highlights:

  • The Bhagini Nivedita Scheme will provide Rs 50,000 to unmarried women pursuing higher education
  • West Bengal has approved 14,454 new government job vacancies
  • The food allowance for SC and ST students in government hostels has increased to Rs 3,300 per month

Apart from the scheme, Suvendu has also announced recruitment to 14,454 jobs in the government sector in six-eight months.

However, the State Public Service Commission and State Police Recruitment Board would conduct the test and recruitment for the newly approved vacancies, Adhikari told reporters after the Cabinet meeting at the state secretariat.

“We had promised to provide one lakh government jobs in the state, and we are moving towards that goal. The PSC is now working at full strength to complete all pending recruitment processes,” he added.

The announced vacancies will be filled across various state departments, including forests, fire services, prisons, home and hill affairs, he said.

On the police recruitment, Adhikari said appointment-related formalities for around 12,000 posts would be conducted on October 11, and about 5,000 shortlisted candidates would receive their appointment letters at a program on the same day.

The chief minister also announced that the monthly remuneration for ‘Karmabandhus’, sanitation workers hired on a contractual basis, engaged under the land revenue department, has been increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000. The revised remuneration will come into effect from this month.

The food allowance for SC and ST students residing in government hostels has also been raised from Rs 1,800 to Rs 3,300 per month, he said.
