Lalremsiami, a member of India's senior women's hockey team that finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, will lead India's 18-man junior squad in the FIH World Cup, which begins on December 5 in South Africa.
The event will feature 16 elite teams from across the world competing for the championship formerly held by Argentina in 2016.
While Lalremsiami, 21, will be the team's captain, Ishika Chaudhary, a defender, will serve as vice-captain. Salima Tete and Sharmila Devi, who were members of the senior squad in the Tokyo Olympics, are also on the team. Preeti and Prabhleen Kaur have been designated as replacement players who will be allowed to compete if someone in the squad is injured or unable to compete due to COVID-19.
Janneke Schopman, Chief Coach Women, stated in a statement released by Hockey India (HI), “to pick the final selection of 18 players was extremely difficult especially as all 28 players in the Core Probable Group worked very hard in the past months and made good progress. But we feel that we have selected a strong team that is able to compete with every team at the Junior World Cup. With the experience from the Senior team and some great young talent we will show the best India has to give. The team is very excited as they have waited a long time to compete at the world stage and we're looking forward to making the most of this great opportunity”.
India's best result in this prestigious tournament was a bronze medal in 2013, when they defeated England to win the bronze medal.
India, who are in Pool C, will play Russia on December 6 to open their campaign.
In their second round-robin encounter, they will face reigning champions Argentina on December 7, followed by a match against Japan on December 9.
The knockout matches will be place between December 10 and December 16.
Pool A includes the Korea, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Netherlands, while Pool B includes Belgium, Uruguay, England and Canada. India, Argentina, Russia, and Japan are in Pool C, while South Africa, the United States, Spain and Germany are in Pool D.
