Southern Railway relaxes norms for Women Passengers

By: WE Staff | Thursday, 24 June 2021

Women passengers will be able to travel freely in Chennai's suburban trains beginning June 25, according to Southern Railway.

Due to an increase in coronavirus cases, the state government imposed a lockdown on May 10 and halted most services, including public transportation. From Friday, the Southern Railway will allow more types of commuters in Chennai to travel in suburban trains.

Women commuters will be allowed to travel around the clock, with the exception of state and federal government employees.

Employees of state and central governments, public sector undertakings, the High Court and other courts, as well as employees of the private sector and other sectors who have a permission letter and an ID card, will be permitted to travel around the clock. Season tickets and single/return journey tickets will be issued.

Passengers with a reserved ticket in a mail/express train will be permitted to travel around the clock, whether returning to their homes or any other location after completing a journey by mail/express train or travelling from their home or any other location to a railway station for boarding the mail/express train. However, only one-way tickets will be issued. Children under the age of 12 who accompany female passengers would be allowed to travel as well.

Southern Railway has urged passengers to follow Covid-19 protocols such as wearing masks, maintaining social distance, and cooperating with railway employees in order to check valid documents during their journey.

Individuals found not wearing masks inside railway premises or trains will be fined Rs 500.

Employees of state and central governments, public sector undertakings, the High Court and other courts, as well as employees of the private sector and other sectors who have a permission letter and an ID card, will be permitted to travel around the clock. Season tickets and single/return journey tickets will be issued.
