Smriti Mandhana Becomes Third Indian and the Fastest Woman to Reach 3000 Runs in ODI

By: WE Staff | Thursday, 22 September 2022

During her team's second ODI match against England on September 21, star opener Smriti Mandhana became the third-fastest Indian overall, behind Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli, to reach 3000 ODI runs.

Dhawan reached 3000 runs in ODIs in 72 innings whereas Kohli did so in 75. Mandhana reached the milestone in her 76th innings, one more innings than Kohli did.

The left-handed opener, who made her ODI debut in 2013, has five hundreds and 24 fifties in the format and, together with Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur, is the third woman from India to surpass the 3,000-run milestone.

Mandhana eclipsed former captain Mithali, who had scored 3000 runs in 88 innings, as the fastest female cricketer in Indian history. There are 22 female players who have scored more than 3000 runs in ODIs, but only two have done so more quickly than Mandhana: Belinda Clark (62 innings) and Meg Lanning (64 innings).

Only seven other women's batsmen have amassed more runs in ODIs since their debut than she has. Only three women have, however, amassed more fifty-plus scores in ODIs throughout this time.

India is currently playing England in the second series of the ICC Women's Championship cycle. The competition determines who qualifies for the 2025 Women's Cricket World Cup.

Mandhana helped India win by seven wickets on Sunday in Hove by scoring an impressive 91 off 99 balls to start the series. She got off to a good start in the second ODI as well, reaching 40 off 51 balls before Sophie Ecclestone trapped her in front.
