Shafali Verma Named Haryana Women's Commission Brand Ambassador

The Haryana State Commission for Women will appoint cricketer Shafali Verma as its Brand Ambassador for 2026 for the promotion of sports, a drug-free lifestyle, gender equality, and women's empowerment, Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia told The Tribune on Wednesday.
Renu mentioned she would be going to Shafali’s home in Rohtak soon to join in congratulating Shafali and providing the official recognition.
She said athletes such as Shafali can be influential role models for youth, and she also said that athlete’s passion and success are also indicative of the values common to all athletes in commitment, discipline, and team-building.
Shafali had a truly outstanding all-round final performance in winning India’s first Women’s World Cup with 87 runs and taking a couple key wickets.
In another development, the Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Batra, visited Shafali’s family in Rohtak to congratulate him also, to Bhupinder the achievement was another moment of pride for both Haryana and India.
He urged the state government to recognize Shafali’s contribution by granting her a senior appointment and a cash award of at least ₹2.5 crore.
Speaking to the media, Bhupinder said that in the previous Congress regime, sportspersons who brought laurels to the country were given huge rewards and made postings in top positions of DSP.
He referred to the case of Joginder Sharma, a key member of India’s World Cup-winning cricket team, who was accorded the post of DSP under Congress rule.
Hooda also spoke about the “Padak Lao, Pad Pao” policy during his tenure, which encouraged the youth to go into sports and shun drugs and crime.
Attacking the present BJP government, he said it has changed the previous policies on sports and education, besides not maintaining the stadiums and schools constructed by the Congress government.
Bhupinder underlined that the government must work towards making proper maintenance of the existing facilities and create new ones to encourage sports and education in the state.
