  • Pomelo Care was launched in 2021 with a virtual maternity care model
  • The model complements traditional pregnancy care by identifying and addressing potential risk factors early

Pomelo Care was established in 2021 with the purpose of offering online maternity care services in addition to maternity care offered by conventional health services.

Through time, the business has grown to cater to health needs beyond maternity. To facilitate its growth, Pomelo Care raised $92 million in its Series C funding round, giving the business a value of $1.7 billion.

The Series C round saw participation by Stripes, Andreessen Horowitz, PLUS Capital, Atomico, BoxGroup, as well as SV Angel. Pomelo Care has already received $46 million within a Series B round back in June 2024, with overall financing at $171 million so far.

Reproductive health services, pregnancy care, pediatrics, hormonal health concerns, and perimenopause and menopause care have been added to the list of services that Pomelo Care provides. The firm also provides preventive and chronic care.

“We founded Pomelo Care because we want to improve maternal outcomes in the United States,” said Marta Bralic Kerns, Chief Executive Officer. The investment will enable the company to apply this strategy to other stages of life, focusing on women and children's health.

In 2024, Pomelo Care received recognition as a Fierce 15 award winner. To date, the company has collaborated with health plans, employers, and currently serves over 25 million members.

Additionally, the company has been offering 24/7 virtual care to its members, equipped with a multispecialty team of healthcare providers and data science resources that aim for risk recognition and continuous surveillance as well as addressing gaps found in the care of patients. Pomelo Care also works alongside practices and providers for patients.

The company states that its virtual maternity care offering has been linked to reduced rates of premature births, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admissions, and overall healthcare expenditures.

At scientific and medical annual meetings in the United States, Pomelo Care has shared claims-based peer-reviewed outcomes data including lengths of stay in NICU, rates of premature births, utilization of emergency rooms, and prenatal screening and treatment for prenatal depression.

Further, the company Pomelo Care also offers a midlife care service based on hormonal, metabolic, and psychological disorders in perimenopause and menopause.
