On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the Indian Women’s Cricket Team at his residence to congratulate them on their amazing success in the World Cup, which stood for resilience and struggle.
A video released on Thursday depicted the Prime Minister with the players as they took opportunity to acknowledge him.
During the recognition, Modi praised the team for having a disappointing start to the tournament (three losses, and negative social media comments) and ultimately bouncing back to secure India’s first Women’s 50-over World Cup title.
He said, "You have done something remarkable," and went on to say cricket; has a certain social and emotional status for the country.
Head Coach Amol Mazumdar thanked the PM and indicated the team was; "honored and privileged to have defined him." He went on to commend the players for the hard work and dedication to the sport for the past two years.
Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana stated after finishing as runners-up in 2017 that she remembered the Prime Minister's encouraging words at that time, and it was only their fate that they were the team to win the World Cup in India as the Prime Minister referred to as motivation.
She mentioned that having the Prime Minister cheering for them while they were out on the field was definitely inspiring.
Player of the Tournament Deepti Sharma mentioned that since 2017, when she had spoken to the Prime Minister, that was great, but he kept her grounded with his real words from 2017.
When asked about the Prime Minister saying "Jai Shri Ram" in her bio on Instagram and that her tattoo of Hanuman gave her strength, she stated her tattoo gave her strength.
The Prime Minister was able to recapture some of the particular moments from the tournament, specifically emphasizing Harleen Deol's catch against England in 2021 and Amanjot Kaur's catch in the final and stated that she could tell the players saw the trophy the minute they caught the ball.
Modi encouraged the athletes to keep inspiring young girls all over the nation and help India's 'Fit India' campaign about physical fitness and active living.
The win under Harmanpreet Kaur's captaincy was historic for women's cricket as they beat South Africa by 52 runs in the final in Navi Mumbai to win the country's first Women's ODI World Cup.
