Pasumai Ulagam Trains 30 Women Entrepreneurs in Financial Literacy

Pasumai Ulagam, a Tamil Nadu-based non-governmental organisation dedicated to empowering marginalised communities, recently organised a financial literacy training programme for 30 women entrepreneurs in Erode. Held on July 20, 2026, the initiative aimed to strengthen women's entrepreneurial capabilities by equipping them with practical financial management skills while providing grants worth ₹3 lakh to support their business ventures.

The programme was chaired by the organisation’s founder, G. Manamohan, who highlighted the importance of financial awareness in helping women build sustainable livelihoods. The training primarily targeted aspiring entrepreneurs from rural communities and urban slums, reflecting the NGO’s long-standing commitment to promoting economic independence among disadvantaged women.

Pasumai Ulagam Chief Executive Officer T. Sheela explained the distribution of ₹3 lakh in grants among the beneficiaries and conducted sessions on essential aspects of business management. She introduced participants to bookkeeping practices, effective marketing strategies and methods to generate sustainable income, enabling them to improve financial planning and business operations.

Senior Programme Officer D. Jayaraj led the financial literacy sessions, guiding participants through the fundamentals of budgeting, savings and financial decision-making. Field coordinators Kousalya and Durga oversaw the smooth execution of the programme and coordinated activities throughout the training.

The initiative forms part of Pasumai Ulagam’s broader mission to improve the socio-economic conditions of marginalised communities through education, livelihood support and entrepreneurship development. Established in 2000 by a group of social activists, the organisation works across rural areas and urban slums to promote quality education, economic empowerment and environmental sustainability. Its programmes particularly focus on women, children and disadvantaged youth.

Over the years, Pasumai Ulagam has supported women's self-help groups and delivered skill development programmes in tailoring, computer literacy, garment making, beautician training, millet snack production, toy making and paramedical services. Backed by organisations such as NABARD, the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC), MSME and other government agencies, the NGO has enabled nearly 300 women to establish self-employment ventures, including garment units, tiffin stalls, rope-making businesses and auto-rickshaw services.

The organisation has also established a Women Entrepreneur Federation to provide aspiring businesswomen with mentorship, networking opportunities and access to resources that help them launch and sustain enterprises.

Beyond women's empowerment, Pasumai Ulagam implements programmes in youth development, child welfare and environmental conservation. Its initiatives include sports training, wildlife conservation activities, residential care for orphaned and tribal children, biodiversity awareness campaigns, tree plantation drives and water conservation projects.
