Over 500 Women Perform Jhamkra Dance at Sujanpur Holi Fest

- More than 500 women participated in the ‘Jhamkra folk dance’ at the festival venue
- A special stage has been organized for daily cultural activities amidst the exhibition stalls
At the Holi Festival, the Sujanpur district and the national-level festival promoted the folk traditions of Sujanpur.
There were over 500 women who performed the Jhamkra folk dance on the festival stage on Tuesday. The Holi Festival Organising Committee had established a dedicated performance area at the exhibition stalls and has run cultural programs every day.
To begin the festival, cultural program coordinator and District Language Officer Santosh Kumar Patial arranged for groups to perform devotional songs and couplets with the use of traditional musical instruments, such as an Ektara, Khartal, Dafli and Dauru, on the first day of the festival.
Devotional singing traditionally develops in the lower regions of Himachal Pradesh, including Hamirpur district, Bilaspur district and Mandi district, has been declining over the past few years.
The positive attention received from the audience for the devotional songs played during the festival was encouraging. There was a painting competition on stage at the exhibition kiosk.
In the folk-dance competition held at the festival, the Kusum Kala Manch troupe of the Sujanpur district won first place, with Diploma of Degree College, Sujanpur, taking second and the Shubham Kala Manch from Hamirpur taking third place.
The winning teams received cash awards of Rs 11,000, Rs 5,100 and Rs 3,100 from local MLA Ranjit Singh. In addition to the folk-dance competition, hundreds of women from various communities in Sujanpur district participated in group performances.
