As an ongoing effort to enhance grassroots participation in the fight against substance abuse, the Drug Reduction, Elimination & Action Mission (DREAM) of the Meghalaya government organized a consultative meeting with women leaders (Seng Kynthei) of Shillong on Wednesday. The meeting was participated in by over 50 women leaders from various areas.
In a statement issued by the government, the participation of Seng Kynthei demonstrated a collective effort to address the issues of substance abuse.
The meeting was organized to enhance grassroots participation and the critical role played by women in protecting their families and communities against the rising issue of drug abuse.
Representatives from various units of Seng Kynthei shared their experiences from their respective communities, including the challenges, affected communities, and the need for awareness and action.
The Managing Director of DREAM introduced the aims and objectives of the mission, the initiatives being undertaken, and the support services offered, including counseling, rehabilitation, and vocational training for drug abusers.
The meeting highlighted the need for improved coordination between community leaders and government departments to ensure effective reporting, referral, and follow-up of substance use cases in a timely manner.
Although appreciating the major contributions made by Seng Kynthei, the MD of DREAM stressed the need for contributions made by them in community mobilization, family counseling, and youth engagement.
He also appreciated the role of women leaders in early identification of substance use, emotional support, and healthy lifestyles at the household level.
Members of Seng Kynthei demonstrated their commitment to actively participate in awareness programs, outreach, and support activities within the DREAM framework.
They also proposed organizing regular meetings and capacity-building activities to further enhance women leaders as drug abuse prevention advocates.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to work together to develop drug-free communities and a safe and healthy future for the youth of Meghalaya.
