- The smart cards were distributed at around 50 centres in the capital
Over 3,500 women picked up their smart cards on Tuesday, a day after the Delhi government launched its ‘Pink Saheli’ scheme.
The initiative was launched on Monday by President Droupadi Murmu. On Tuesday, the distribution of smart cards was carried out at about 50 locations in New Delhi.
Over 3,622 women visited the locations and were issued smart cards after on-the-spot verification, officials said.
Out of this number, 3,612 eligible women were issued pink cards, while 10 blue cards were issued to other women. “The number of women who turned up on the first day was more than what we had expected,” officials said, adding that the number is expected to rise in the coming days.
The Pink National Common Mobility (PNCM) card scheme will offer free movement to women and transgender people on Delhi Transport Corporation and cluster buses.
It will be issued under the ‘One Nation, One Card’ initiative and will allow users to use different modes of transport with a single smart card.
Each card will be associated with the beneficiary’s Aadhaar number and mobile phone to verify the age, gender, and domicile details.
The system will replace the traditional pink ticket and will be used to facilitate contactless travel, maintain digital journey slips, and ensure greater transparency in the revenue management process.
Although the bus journey will be free for women residents in Delhi, the card will be useful for those who want to travel on other modes of public transport, such as the Delhi Metro and the Regional Rapid Transit System.
The program will issue three different cards: pink cards for women residents in Delhi, blue cards for general commuters, and orange cards for monthly pass users. In the first phase, pink and blue cards will be issued, and the orange card will be introduced later.
The centers to issue the cards will be the offices of the district and sub-divisional magistrates, along with some DTC locations. Of the nearly 50 centers, 20 will be run by the DTC.
The corporation has also appointed Hindon Mercantile Limited (MufinPay) and Airtel Payments Bank Limited to issue the cards, which will be connected to the existing automatic fare collection system in the city.
