The Odisha government recently announced a new policy granting women employees one day of menstrual leave or paid period leave per month in order to support women's health and well-being during their menstruation which causes physical discomfort and cramps. Female employees have been provided an additional 12 days of casual leave apart from the 15 days they already have annually. The paid period leave was announced by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on 15 August 2024 which has been officially implemented now.
The recent policy aims to promote a more inclusive environment and supportive network for women driving gender parity and women's empowerment. This policy addresses the physical and emotional challenges of women during their menstruation cycle fostering a sense of security and empathy. Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi issued a notice stating, "All the women employees of Odisha government can avail the additional CLs annually apart from the 15 days they get currently. Now they will receive 27 days of CLs."
Women working in public and private sectors will receive the one-day menstrual leave policy following a consultation with the Supreme Court request. Odisha becomes the third Indian state to adopt this policy acknowledging women following Bihar and Kerala.
